ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specialising in science and technology. It is renowned for its excellent education, its cutting-edge fundamental research and its efforts to put new knowledge and innovations directly into practice. The Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) at the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering performs international leading research on power electronic converter systems required for example in future energy distribution systems for integrating renewable energy sources or in traction applications/electric mobility. A further research focus is on solid state pulse modulators for medical applications (computer tomography/cancer treatment) and accelerators (CERN). For a new industry related research project on advanced magnetic devices, we are recruiting a Ph.D. candidate (100%) for modelling and optimising advanced magnetic devices for future railway/traction systems
We are looking for outstanding, highly motivated people interested in pursuing Ph.D. research in the multi-disciplinary and game-changing area of magnetic components. Highly compact and efficient inductors as well as transformers are decisive key elements in most power electronic converters, because these components drastically influence the efficiency and power density of the full converter systems. In order to keep up with the fast development of semiconductors (e.g. wide band gap SiC MOSFETs/GaN HEMT), advanced concepts for magnetic devices and comprehensive models of the components should be developed by you for future power electronic converter systems in tractions applications. These models should be computationally efficiently integrated in optimisation procedures of power electronic converters and are mandatory for achieving outstanding system efficiencies and power densities as well as for gaining an advantage in competition. For verifying the new concepts and the models, you will design and build prototype systems and evaluated them in detail by measurements.
In our lab, you can expect a challenging and scientifically highly exciting full-time position in a dynamic, international team at one of the world-wide leading technical universities. Furthermore, we strongly support participation at international conferences and offer a competitive salary, excellent benefits as well as outstanding research and laboratory facilities for your experiments.
