As an international student it’s important to take your individual financial situation into consideration, as well as the cost of living in the town where your university is located. Where you are living will likely have a significant impact on costs related to your children, including everything from food and clothing to day care. Education Education is mandatory for children up to the age of 17 and you can enroll your child in the local public school at no cost. Contact the Board of Education to determine which school you are districted for. The school will require a copy of your child’s immunization records and birth certificate. Past educational records, while not required, are helpful. English language instruction is mandatory for speakers who are not yet fluent. If your child has special needs, such as a learning disability, your school should be able to accommodate that. Private schools are also available. They are expensive and, in theory, offer a better, safer education than public schools. However, many cities and towns offer high-quality public education, so your decision may be based largely upon where you live, in addition to what you can afford. Health Care It may be mandatory for you to enroll in health insurance at your school. You will have the option to include dependents. If it is not mandatory, doing so is strongly advised. It may seem like an unnecessary expense, but an emergency hospital visit in the U.S. can cost thousands of dollars. Uninsured foreigners are often unpleasantly surprised at the cost of doctor’s visits, prescriptions, and other medical needs. If you choose to opt out of insurance, many cities offer free or low-cost clinics where you and your children can be served at a lesser (although often still substantial) price. If an emergency occurs, dial either 911 or 0 and an ambulance will be sent to you. Remember to carry your health insurance card on you at all times. Child Care You will need to locate child care for the hours when you’ll be unavailable. If your child is young, look into day cares. Obtaining recommendations and doing site visits is a good idea. Some daycares have long wait lists, so start the search process as early as possible – six months to a year is advisable in some cases. It’s also key to find at least one or two local, responsible teens to babysit. Depending upon where you live, babysitters will charge between $5 and $12 per hour and the cost will increase with more children. Preparing Your Children The process of emotionally preparing your children will differ depending upon their ages. It’s important to have conversations about what to expect, and to explore your children’s questions and fears about the move, the new location, and their new school. Looking at a map and photos of your future destination can help children gain a sense of control and ease their fears about transitioning to the unknown. In addition, many television shows and Hollywood films portray extreme and unrealistic depictions of the American experience, so it may be usul to compare and contrast what “real life” in America is like versus what your child has seen onscreen.立即咨询
