　　There are three official categories of people in Canada: citizens, permanent residents, and temporary residents. International students, visitors, and foreign workers are all classified as temporary residents. As an international student studying in Canada, you will typically require two types of official documents: a Canadian Study Permit and a valid passport from your home country. 　　NOTE: NEW REGULATIONS AS OF JUNE 1ST, 2014

　　Citizenship and Immigration Canada is instituting new rules that will affect all international students studying in Canada that take fect on June 1st, 2014. The most notable changes include:

　　§ Study permits will only be issued to applicants studying at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), YorkU is a designated learning institution;

　　§ Students must actively pursue their studies at the DLI while in Canada, failing to do so could result in removal from Canada;

　　§ Full-time international students enrolled at a DLI in certain programs are allowed to work part time off-campus and full time during scheduled breaks without a work permit;

　　§ DLIs such as YorkU are obligated to report to CIC on students’ continued enrolment and academic status. An immigration officer may require that you provide proof of your continued enrollment and academic status;

　　§ Under these new regulations, study permits will become invalid 90 days after you have completed your study program.
