Fees, living costs and funding opportunities
Tuition Fees
Tuition fees for 2011/12 are as follows. These fees cover all charges in respect of teaching, use of equipment/laboratories and examinations.
- International Bridging Year and Year 0 of 4 year degree programmes: £8,500
- Certificate of Higher Education in Business: £11,500
- Standard fee Undergraduate degrees: £10,750
- Higher fee for Biological Sciences, Health and Human Sciences,and Psychology Undergraduate degrees: £12,750
- Standard fee for Postgraduate degrees: £10,750
- Higher fee for Biology, Finance and Psychology Postgraduate degrees: £12,750

Living and Accommodation Costs
Based on our and our students’ experience, The University of Essex believes that, to study at one of our campuses, students will need between £6,000 and £7,500 for a 39-week course or between £7,600 and £9,500 for 50 weeks. More...
For students who will require a student visa the UK Border Agency is currently quoting £800 per month or £9,600 per year for living expenses in the UK and therore student visa applicants may be required to show availability of this level of funds in making a visa application.
Accommodation CostsSingle students at the main Colchester campus are currently guaranteed a University room throughout their course of study. Postgraduate research students are guaranteed accommodation for their first year of study only but can apply in subsequent years. The University offers a limited number of rooms suitable for married couples.
Accommodation and living costs are listed below. More information about the different types of accommodation offered is available from the Accommodation Office.
- Single campus room with shared bathroom: from £2,465 (39 weeks) or £3,160 (50 weeks)
- Single campus room with private toilet and shower: from £3,647 (39 weeks) or £4,896 (50 weeks)
Brand new accommodation is being built at the Southend Campus which will be ready for 2010. The accommodation will be located just two minutes from the main campus building, and will contain around 500 en-suite rooms.
All students may choose to live in privately rented accommodation if they so wish. The Accommodation Office can help you find something suitable.
Living CostsThe following estimates are based on the average amount a single student will need to spend on items such as food, books, stationery and clothes as well as travel and leisure. Separate figures are given for students who spend 39 weeks at the University (going home during the summer vacation) and those students, mainly postgraduates who spend almost the whole year at the University.
- 39 weeks - £3,500
- 50 weeks - £4,400
*Costs for tuition fees and accommodation should be added to these figures to give an indication of the overall cost a student will need to cover for a year's study.
