“If you choose to study medicine, you can enter the best medical college in China and become one of the best doctors. And we can arrange well the future for you. But materials, can you tell me anyone who is successful by studying materials in China? All of them live a hard life in the labs. Why are you so stubborn?” My father looked at me with rage. “Because I love materials!” My firm eyesight and short but powerful answer made my parents realize that no chance was allowed to change my choice of major after the University Entrance Examination.
When I was at the age of six, a TV popular science programme interested me and implanted me an illusion of curing hemorrhagic stroke by cleaning blood vessel rubbish with a nano Robot. Several years later, the high coincidence of my illusion and overseas scientists research thoughts on nano robot excited and attracted me greatly to nanotechnology. When I was at senior grade one, a lecture by a professor on Nanomedicine Magnetic Targeting for fighting cancer cells recalled me of my child dream and firmed my determination to study nano-materials, leading to the collision between me and my parents at the same time.
In addition to my parents‘ opposition, school transfer also tested my sincerity for materials. As a result of my parents’ work change, I had to transfer from a small city middle school to the key provincial senior school, turning from an outstanding white swan to an ugly duckling. The feeling of isolation, great differences in teaching ways and pace made me fall from one of the top ten students of the whole grade to one of the slowest students in class. In the University Entrance Examination, I became a loser of our country‘s special talent selection system for a lack of three points, the very points for a multiple choice. In order to continue my pursuit of Materials Science, confronting great pressure, I overcame my conceit and impatience and was successfully enrolled by Wuhan University of Technology, one of the best universities for materials research in China.
I am now a steady, strong and low-profiled man with my persistence never worn away. My diligence won me the chance for international exchange class where I was always the Top 1 in the two years’ English courses. Moreover I gained a high 91 points in the material science course which fails almost two thirds of students. This won me appreciation from Prof.*** of*** University. Besides theoretical studies, I also paid attention to the progress in the field of Nanometer Technology and read papers of Professor ***, ***, *** etc. To improve my practice ability and check my thoughts through experiments, I made every fort to become a member of Dr. ***‘s lab for *** research after participating in national NSF program “***” and province key program “***”.
In Dr. ***’s Lab, my major research interest is one dimensional nanomaterials of the oxide of transitional metals. Now I concentrated myself on the synthesis and assemble one dimension oxide of vanadium and LaVO4. Few papers have reported the research on performance of LB thin film and the research on using LB approach to assemble one dimensional oxide of metals is struggling to start, especially for the oxide of vanadium. In order to synthesis good performance oxide of vanadium and control the growth of these nanomaterials, I, initially, designed the experiment to control the growth of the nanorods of V2O5 and VO2, modified surface of these nanomaterials to functionalize these material and solve the difficult task of monodispersion. And I have successfully synthesis mono- dispersion nanorods of VO2 by using microemulsion method and assemble this one dimensional nanomaterial by using LB approach.
Accidentally, I found the method to control the growth of nano-urchin V2O5 which is not in the initially design of the experiment. This nano-urchin can range from 1nm to 100nm and uniform shape indicates its promising performance on battery due to its large ratio surface area and good performance on its electrical transportation. Accordingly, another target of my project is to synthesis nanorods of LaVO4 and assembles it by LB approach.
I stick to my affection for Materials Science during the whole undergraduate phase. And I even gave up the chance of love relationship and the opportunity to be enrolled without graduate entrance examinations by China‘s best university----Tsinghua University. Because I know that top American universities, especially Harvard University, are the best platform for me to achieve my goal. Because I love the university motto of Harvard that is “Let Plato be your friend, and Aristotle, but more let your friend be truth”, I feel that I am the right man for this spirit. Truth is what I determine to pursuit with my whole life. Nanoscience and Nanotechnology are part of my life. This is an interdisciplinary area which needs strong background of many areas, including chemistry, physics, medicine, biology, engineering and so forth. Harvard is the right university which emphasis the interdisciplinary and also has strong background on lots of area. I am sure Harvard is the right choice for me and it can provide the platform I need to achieve my life goal. As long as I am endowed with this opportunity, I am sure to prove to my parents with my performance that my choice of the major is absolutely right.
