　　Tokyo Film Festival Names Chen Kaige as Jury President

　　The Tokyo International Film Festival named Chinese director Chen Kaige as president of this year&aposs jury, praising his decades-long career at the forront of contemporary Chinese cinema.

　　The critically acclaimed director of films such as &aposFarewell My Concubine&apos (1993), &aposTemptress Moon&apos (1996) and &aposCaught in the Web&apos (2012) is one of China&aposs leading filmmakers and one of the most prominent to emerge in the 1980s as part of the Fifth Generation, a group that also includes Zhang Yimou.

　　这位备受好评的导演曾执导过《霸王别姬》(Farewell My Concubine，1993年)、《风月》(Temptress Moon，1996年)和《搜索》(Caught in the Web，2012年)等影片，是中国主要电影人之一，也是上世纪80年代开始出现的“第五代导演”中的杰出代表。“第五代导演”中还包括张艺谋。

　　&aposFarewell My Concubine,&apos an epic love story set in the world of Peking opera during China&aposs 20th-century political upheaval, won the Palme d&aposOr at Cannes in 1993, the first Chinese film to take home the festival&aposs top prize.

　　《霸王别姬》讲述的是20世纪中国政治动荡时期发生在京剧圈中的一个史诗性爱情故事。该片在1993年的戛纳电影节上摘得金棕榈奖，是获得这一奖项的首部中国影片。

　　Mr. Chen, who began his feature-film career with &aposYellow Earth&apos in 1984, has sat on the juries of some of the world&aposs biggest film festivals, including Berlin in 1989 and Cannes in 1998. In 2007, he served as jury president of the Shanghai festival.

　　陈凯歌1984年以一部《黄土地》(Yellow Earth)开始了故事片导演生涯。他曾担任过全球一些大型电影节的评委，包括1989年柏林电影节和1998年戛纳电影节。2007年，他担任上海电影节评委会主席。

　　In naming him as this year&aposs president, Tokyo festival organizers cited Mr. Chen as &aposa cinematic keeper of China&aposs cultural heritage for his string of elegant, masterful period dramas.&apos

　　东京国际电影节组织方在宣布由陈凯歌担任今年的评委会主席时说，陈凯歌因其一系列优雅、技艺精湛的年代片成为用电影保存中国文化遗产之人。

　　Mr. Chen, in a statement on Wednesday, embraced the philosophical aspect of movie-making.

　　陈凯歌周三在一份声明中谈到了电影制作中的哲学。

　　&aposThroughout the history of cinema, truly excellent films are rare,&apos Mr. Chen said. &aposWhen we think of film as an industry, movies that can make money are valued more highly than truly excellent films,&apos he said. &aposNevertheless, we can still find films with strong characteristics which inspire us, because life itself is an inspiration.&apos

　　陈凯歌说，整个电影史中，真正优秀的影片很少。当我们把电影作为一个产业时，能够赚钱的影片比真正优秀的影片更受重视。不管怎样，我们仍能找到给予我们灵感的具有强烈特点的影片，因为人生本身就是一个灵感来源。

　　Mr. Chen&aposs appointment comes at a time when a growing number of younger mainland Chinese filmmakers are seeking new audiences at both home and abroad for their commercial movies, art-house films and documentaries chronicling society&aposs changes.

　　陈凯歌当选评委会主席之际，恰逢越来越多的内地年轻电影人在国内外市场为其拍摄的商业片、艺术片和记录社会变迁的纪录片吸引新观众。

　　In an interview with the Journal last year, Mr. Chen addressed the challenge of filmmaking under a watchful political system.

　　陈凯歌去年接受本报采访时谈到了在一个喜欢监控的政治体系下拍电影所面临的挑战。

　　&aposWe still have the same problem we had three decades ago,&apos he said. &aposThere&aposs this awkward situation where it is difficult to express everything you want the way that you want.&apos

　　他说，我们仍有和30年前一样的问题。这是一种尴尬的状态，你无法用自已想用的方式来表达一切想表达的东西。

　　But he also welcomed recent changes in the industry, saying that &apos30 years ago, it would be impossible to create a private production company. No way. You could only work with state-run studios. Now it is natural, there are private producers and funds to help you make films.&apos

　　The 26th Tokyo International Film Festival kicks off Oct. 17 with &aposCaptain Phillips&apos starring Tom Hanks and closes Oct. 25 with director Koki Mitani&aposs &aposThe Kiyosu Conference.&apos
