Anger over Washington&aposs extensive eavesdropping on world leaders and ordinary citizens has shown no signs of abating, as observers say using anti-terrorism as an excuse for pervasive surveillance is "hypocritical and abused".

这里的eavesdrop指to listen secretly what other people are saying(偷听别人说话,窃听),常用的搭配就是eavesdrop on somebody;与其意思相近的表达还有listen in,如:Someone was listening in on our conversation.(有人在偷听我们谈话)

Intercept指to stop and take someone or something that is going from on place to another place bore that person or thing gets there,即“拦截,截取”,如:Detectives have been intercepting her mail.(侦查人员一直在拦截她的邮件)

US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper attends a House Intelligence Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington on Tuesday.

The FBI wiretapped his phone.(联邦调查局窃听了他的电话)口语中还常用bug一词来表示“窃听”,如:The police bugged his apartment.(警察对他家实施窃听)。
