Recent research by Chinese scholars has shown that lovers have certain advantages when it comes to cooperation, and that females play a leading role in cooperation between heterosexual couples.
The research was conducted by Professor Hu Yi’s team at East China Normal University. According to Hu, the pairs of research subjects were divided by relationship dynamic: lovers, friends and strangers. They were then asked to perform a cooperative task, during which their brain activity was recorded. The researchers found that, between the three types of relationships, lovers were best at cooperation.
Lovers finished assigned tasks in less time and in a more stable manner. They demonstrated increased interpersonal brain synchronization, which correlated with their performance of the tasks. This edge was not present between friends or strangers, noted Hu.
The research also shows that it takes more time for a man to respond during a cooperative task. What’s more, there was stronger directional synchronization from females to males than from males to females, suggesting that females take a leading role in cooperative tasks, while males follow the lead of females.
The lovers participating in the experiment were all young or middle-aged couples in passionate love. Future research will consider love in different stages, said Hu.
