issue 112."Some educational systems emphasize the development of students&apos capacity for reasoning and logical thinking, but students would benit more from an education that also taught them to explore their own emotions."

  这个是上海频率排40左右的,不算很高频但还好写过详细提纲

argument 17.The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Walnut Grove town newspaper.

"Walnut Grove&aposs town council has advocated switching from EZ Disposal (which has had the contract for trash collection services in Walnut Grove for the past ten years) to ABC Waste, because EZ recently raised its monthly fee from $2,000 to $2,500 a month, whereas ABC&aposs fee is still $2,000. But the town council is mistaken; we should continue using EZ. EZ collects trash twice a week, while ABC collects only once. Moreover, EZ—which, like ABC, currently has a fleet of 20 trucks—has ordered additional trucks. Finally, EZ provides exceptional service: 80 percent of respondents to last year&aposs town survey agreed that they were &apossatisfied&apos with EZ&aposs performance."

Issue 88."Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics.

Argument217.The following appeared in a brochure promoting the purchase of local franchises for a national chain of gyms. "Now is the time to invest in a Power-Lift Gym franchise so that you can profit from opening one of our gyms in your town. Consider the current trends: Power-Lift Gyms are already popular among customers in 500 locations, and national surveys indicate increasing concern with weight loss and physical fitness. Furthermore, last year&aposs sales of books and magazines on personal health totaled more than $50 million, and purchases of home exercise equipment almost doubled. Investing now in a Power-Lift Gym franchise will guarantee a quick profit."

ISSUE36."The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."

180."Many problems of modern society cannot be solved by laws and the legal system because moral behavior cannot be legislated."

AGUMENT1.The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Nature&aposs Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products.

"Previous experience has shown that our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should therore build our next new store in Plainsville, which has many such residents. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed five years ago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a new generation of customers: Plainsville&aposs schoolchildren are required to participate in a &aposfitness for life&apos program, which emphasizes the benits of regular exercise at an early age ."

issue8 "It is often necessary, even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public."

argument152.The following is a letter to the head of the tourism bureau on the island of Tria.

"Erosion of beach sand along the shores of Tria Island is a serious threat to our island and our tourist industry. In order to stop the erosion, we should charge people for using the beaches. Although this solution may annoy a few tourists in the short term, it will reduce the number of people using the beaches and will raise money for replenishing the sand. Replenishing the sand, as was done to protect buildings on the nearby island of Batia, will help protect buildings along our shores, thereby reducing these buildings&apos risk of additional damage from severe storms. And since the areas along the shore will be more attractive as a result, the beaches will be preserved and the area&aposs tourist industry will improve over the long term."

Issue103:"The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."

Issue72."One can best understand the most important characteristics of a society by studying its major cities."

146."People who are the most deeply committed to an idea or policy are the most critical of it."

Argument167.A folk remedy* for insomnia, the scent in lavender flowers, has now been proved fective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. During the second week, the volunteers discontinued their medication. As a result, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. This shows that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia. *A folk remedy is usually a plant-based form of treatment common to traditional forms of medicine, ones that developed bore the advent of modern medical services and technology.

Issue40."Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

203.The following appeared in a newspaper feature story.

"At the small, nonprofit hospital in the town of Saluda, the average length of a patient&aposs stay is two days; at the large, for-profit hospital in the nearby city of Megaville, the average patient stay is six days. Also, the cure rate among patients in the Saluda hospital is about twice that of the Megaville hospital. The Saluda hospital has more employees per patient than the hospital in Megaville, and there are few complaints about service at the local hospital. Such data indicate that treatment in smaller, nonprofit hospitals is more economical and of better quality than treatment in larger, for-profit hospitals."
