　　All the new buildings in cities and towns should be built in the traditional style. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

　　Many cities around the world are known for their special architecture; New York for its 1920’s buildings, Paris for its 19th century splendour, Sydney for the Opera House to name a few. For some cities it is important that the traditions of the past are kept in new constructions, while for newer cities building iconic new structures can go a long way to building a city’s personality.

　　Many old cities such as London and Paris wish to retain their historical heart. As a result, town planners, and the local people have insisted that all new constructions built in the heart be faithful to the traditional architecture. Modern constructions are only allowed outside the main historical centers, which means that for residents and tourists old cities can be a reminder of the past. A further example of this can be shown in the rebuilding of New Orleans after the hurricane. Because of intense historical significance of the city, all new constructions are being built in traditional styles to recapture the city’s spirit.

　　For new and developing cities, however, such as Shanghai or Singapore, focusing on developing the cities personality is important to town planners. Therore the cities strive to build new beautifully designed modern structures which then become part of the uniqueness of the city. The Bird’s Nest in Beijing and the Financial Tower in Shanghai are examples of this.

　　In conclusion, from the above discussion it can be seen that the decision to maintain traditional designs often depends on the age and architectural history of the city. Whilst many cities in Europe are famous for their historical hearts, many newer cities are becoming equally famous for their modern structures. (279 words)
