1. What will you study in the United States? [b] What will you do in USA? [b] I will pursue my Ph.D. degree in Optics at University of AAA, the [b]best optical research center in the United States, or even in the world. [b] [b]2. What is your purpose for the visa? [b] I need an F-one visa to pursue a doctor degree in the University of [b]AAA. I plan to finish my study in five years and then come back to China. [b] [b]3. What is your major? In what aspect of your major will you study? [b] Could you tell me something about your major (specialty)? [b] What is your specialty? [b] My major is optical engineering at Tsinghua University, and I will [b]pursue my Ph.D. degree in Optics at University of AAA. [b] My graduate research at Tsinghua University focuses on Optical Image [b]Recognition, which uses volume holographic storage and wavelet compression. [b] (Volume holographic storage is the next generation of data storage, [b]which provides large digital storage capacity, fast data transfer speeds, [b]and short access times. Its fundamental mechanism is storing the [b]three-dimension information in some special crystals through optical [b]methods.) [b] (Wavelet technology is also a new technology for information [b]analysis . It can freely analyze the frequency of a certain signal [b]according to the requirements. So it is called the 'mathematical icroscope' [b]and is often used to compress digital data and filter signals). [b] As a rule of Opitcs of AAA, my specialty will be determined after [b]one year after I study there. At that time, I can freely select my tutor [b]and research program. And probably I will select optical storage or optical [b]communication as my special area. [b] [b]4. What do you want to study in USA? [b] I will study Optics at University of AAA. 见上一句话。 [b] [b]5. Why do you like your major? [b] I have been doing research works on optics for more than 3 years [b]since I was only a junior student. And I have participated in or even been [b]in charge of several (seven) projects. I find great satisfaction in doing [b]and completing these projects. These cherished experiences inspired me with [b]great interest in optical research, and lay solid foundation for the [b]further research. And also Optics is a promising subject. Optical storage [b]and optical communication are very important to our future lives. [b] [b]6. What's the difference between your major now and the major in USA? [b] In fact they are the same. Maybe optical engineering is a little [b]more engineering, and optics is a little more theoretical. [b] [b]7. When/where did you get your BS/MS? [b] What is your academic background? [b] I got my Bachelor degree from the Department of Precision [b]Instruments at Tsinghua University in July 2000. After 4 days, on July [b]9th, I will have my graduation ceremony, and at that time, I will get my [b]Master degree from Tsinghua University. [b] [b]8. What's the difference between your undergraduate major and graduate [b]major ? [b] My undergraduate major is Precision Instruments, Measurement and [b]Control. And my graduate major is Optical Engineering. My undergraduate [b]major has many aspects, and optical engineering is just one of them. So [b]actually my graduate major is more specialized than my undergraduate major. [b] [b]9. What/where are you studying now? [b] I am now a graduate student in the Department of Precision [b]Instrument s at Tsinghua University. And after 4 days, on July 9th, I will [b]have my graduation ceremony, at that time; I will get my Master degree from [b]Tsinghua University. [b] [b]10. How long will you study in USA? [b] The I-20 form says my duration of study will be 7 years. But [b]actually the normal time is 6 years. And I think through my hard work, I [b]can finish Ph.D. study within 5 years. [b] [b]11. How do you know this Univ.? [b]Why do you choose this Univ.? [b] University of AAA is a very good university in USA. Especial its [b]Institute of Optics gains high reputation in the optical research field. [b]You know, it always ranks No. 1. The Institute of Optics has very great [b]facilities , outstanding faculty and very strong research and education [b]records. It is the best optical research center in the United States or [b]even in the world. [b] [b]12. Have you any scholarship? [b] Yes. The Univ. offers me a Fellowship. This award will provide [b]full-time tuition and annual maintenance. It can cover all the necessary [b]expense in the United States. [b] [b]13. Why do you receive financial aid from this Univ.? [b] I think it is because of my past academic record and research [b]work. [b] The University thinks I am an excellent student and has great potential [b]for doctoral research there. [b] [b]14. When did you take the [url= test? [b] I took my GRE test in December 2000, and I took my TOEFL test in [b]May 2001. Show the materials. [b] [b]15. Have you applied the universities indicated in your GRE report? What is [b]the result? [b]Why there is no University of AAA? [b] Yes. I apply all the universities indicated in my GRE report. And [b]Duke gives me an offer. The other three reject me. You know I took my GRE [b]test 2 years ago, and at that time I didn't think the selection of [b]universities that I want to study too much. I just consider the all over [b]fame of the university. And when I applied the universities last year, I [b]sent my GRE//TOEFL report to AAA. [b] [b]16. How many universities have you applied? Which are they? [b] How many admitted you? Which are they? [b] I have applied 8 universities. They are MIT, Princeton, UC- [b]Berkeley , Duke, Northwestern, AAA, Wisconsin-Madsin, Syracuse. [b] 2 admissions and 2 offers. Duke and AAA admit me, and give me the [b]full financial aids. Wisconsin-Madsin and Syracuse give me only admission. [b] Two UK universities, Cambridge and Oxford. (只说admission,没有钱). [b] [b]17. Why do you choose AAA instead of Duke? [b] These two universities are both good universities, maybe Duke is [b]more famous. But in the optical research field, AAA is the NO. 1, it is the [b]best optical research center in the world. So compared with Duke, AAA is [b]better. [b] And you know, University of AAA is sited in a small quite city, I [b]think it will be easy for me to concentrate on my study and research. [b] [b]18. Why do you want to study in USA? Why not in other country? [b] Why not in China? [b] I applied two UK universities: Oxford and Cambridge. Both are the [b]best universities in the world and give me admission. But they don't give [b]me full financial aids. (Could you like to see the admission letters of [b]the se two universities?) Other countries like German and France all [b]have advanced technologies. But unfortunately I doesn't know Germany and [b]French. [b]1. The United States really has the most leading science and technology, [b]first-class facilities and many outstanding scientists in the world. So I [b]think I can really learn advanced knowledge and do novel research. [b]2. The education and research systems of US universities will give me well [b]training which will make me a mature researcher and benit all my life. I [b]think that in US I can broaden my eyes, and learn how the world-class [b]researchers think, study and research. [b]3. The most important reason, to obtain a Ph.D. degree in a well-known [b]foreign university is really necessary for me to realize my dream to be a [b]professor in the top Chinese universities. Trust me. Now if you want to [b]search a research position in those top China universities, especially in [b]Tsinghua University or Peking University, you should have a Ph.D. degree of [b]a foreign university. Or you can only be an assistant professor or an [b]associate professor, hardly be a professor. And as the competition in China [b]is tenser and tenser, and more and more students who are now studying [b]abroad come back to China, this trend will be more obviously. And maybe it [b]should be a Ph.D. degree of a FAMOUS foreign university. So I think that [b]going to US to study for my Ph. D. degree could make me have more [b]advantages in the future competition in China. It seems somewhat an [b]investment. I spend several years on hard study and research, and I will [b]gain my advantages in the future competition. [b] I can easily pursue my Ph. D. Degree in Tsinghua University. Our [b]research group is the best one in China. So I don't want pursue my Ph.D. [b]degree in other Chinese Universities. And as I have done good research work [b]in our lab, if I have not got such good opportunities to study abroad, my [b]tutor will warmly welcome me to pursue my Ph.D. degree directly. Could [b]you like to see the support letter of my tutor here? [b] [b]19. Why do you want to pursue a doctor's degree? (抓住主要,提纲携领) [b] First, I have interest to pursue my academic career. I have been [b]doing research works on optics for more than 3 years since I was only a [b]junior student. And I had some opportunities to exercise my knowledge. [b]These cherished experiences inspired me with great interest in this area, [b]also let me realize what I have learned is so limited. Now I know, if I [b]want to be a top researcher in the optical fields, I should continuously [b]get better education and training. From my perspective, the opportunity to [b]be enrolled in AAA doctor program is a unique and invaluable one. I really [b]want to continue to learn something. [b] Second, to obtain a Ph.D. degree in a well-known foreign university [b]is really necessary for me to realize my dream to be a professor in the top [b]Chinese universities. Trust me. Now if you want to search a research [b]position in those top China universities, especially in Tsinghua University [b]or Peking University, you should have a Ph.D. degree of a foreign [b]university. Or you can only be an assistant professor or an associate [b]professor, hardly be a professor. And as the competition in China is tenser [b]and tenser, and more and more students who are now studying abroad come [b]back to China, this trend will be more obviously. And maybe it should be a [b]Ph.D. degree of a FAMOUS foreign university. So I think that going to US [b]to study for my Ph. D. degree could make me have more advantages in the [b]future competition in China. It seems somewhat an investment. I spend [b]several years on hard study and research , and I will gain my advantages in [b]the future competition. [b] [b]20. What do you do with your work for Ph.D.? [b] What will you do after graduation? [b] What is your plan? [b] After graduation, I will come back to China, and to be a core [b]researcher in our optical research group at Tsinghua University. You know, [b]Tsinghua University is getting to set up a new department named Department [b]of Optical Information within 3 or 4 years. And our research group will be [b]one part of this new department and there will be many opportunities to get [b] research positions at that time. With my Ph.D. degree of Optics of AAA and [b] my excellent research work, I am aiming to be a research professor in this [b]new department soon after my back and set up my own lab. My research [b]subject wil still focus optics, especially on optical storage and optical [b]communication. I think these subjects are very promising, and there will be [b]many works to be explored on them. [b] [b]21. Are you certainly could find such a position in Tsinghua University? [b] Why can you find such a position? [b] Yes. I am sure. [b] First, Tsinghua University now begins to set up a new department [b]named Department of Optical Information, which is under the School of [b]Information Science. This department will be made up with those major of [b]physicaal optics, optical engineering and opto-electronics. And this [b]department will be founded within 3 or 4 years and will have great [b]opportunities to develop very fast. So when I graduate from AAA, it is just [b]the time. [b] Second, my tutor and other teachers in our research group warmly [b]welcome these students who graduate from our group and then get a Ph.D. [b]degree from a foreign university come back again and do research work in [b]the group. Since the teachers of our research group are a little older, so [b]our research group is really in great need of fresh blood. The leader of [b]our research group is the academician of the Chinese Academy of [b]Engineering, BBBB. He has set up a plan providing attractive conditions to [b]those students. And he has talked with me some days bore and welcomed me [b]back. [b] Third, I have to say that though the research level here in Tsinghua [b]University is the best in China, it is much lower than the world-class [b]research level in the United States. So when I finish my study in the best [b]optical research center in the world, I will get good training and could be [b]a good researcher. My new idea, new knowledge together with my Ph.D. [b]degree will be very competitive for me to get a position in Tsinghua. [b] [b]22. How old is your tutor? How old is the academician? [b] My tutor is 54 years old. And the academician is about 63 years [b]old. He will not retire. [b] [b]23. If you can't find such a position, how can you? [b] I certainly can find such a position in Tshinghua University. The [b]possibility of not being accepted is very very low. If this case really [b]happens, I will find a research position in other famous university in [b]China. You know I am from Zhejiang province, and my hometown is Hangzhou [b]City. My uncle , Prof. CCCC is now the dean of School of Information [b]Science at Zhejiang University, another well-known university in China. My [b]uncle treats me as his own son, and always gives me suggestions on my [b]career. I am sure if I can't get a research position in Tsinghua [b]University, I can get it in Zhejiang University. [b] [b]24. Give me three reasons that you will come back to China? [b]Why will you come back to China? [b]Why will you want to find a research position in China, not in US? [b]You can get better salary and working condition in USA, why will you come [b]back? [b]1. You know, life is not just a kind of job, but a career. One should not [b]consider the situation nowadays, he should think of it carully in a long [b]term. Whether it can benit for your future life I think is more [b]important. [b]Yes, I can get better salary and working condition in USA after I graduate. [b]But I think, to my personal development, China is better. Now China is [b]under development, and many fields need to be explored or developed. This [b]may take several decades. So there are a lot of opportunities in China now [b]and in the near future. And with my academic background, I can easily [b]catch these opportunities and set up my own career in China. I can become a [b]research professor in Tsinghua University, set up my own lab, and even like [b]the professor of US universities, found my own enterprise. That's perfect. [b]And here, I also can get high social status. A Professor of Tsinghua [b]University with a Ph.D. degree of a foreign university will be respected [b]not only in Beijing, but also in China. Now more and more student who have [b]studied abroad come back to China, this trend is just correspond with the [b]situation here. [b]2. On the other words, I don't agree with your words that "I will have [b]better salary in US". You know, if you are really a good research, you will [b]always get good salary everywhere. Now in Tsinghua University or Peking [b]University the monthly incomes of most professors are no less than 8000 [b]RMB, Including salary and other allowance. And since most of them have [b]project funding, so actually they will lead nice lives. In our research [b]group, there is a professor named DDD who was graduated from the University [b]of AAA and came back to China 3 years ago. He is now the leading [b]researcher on optical grating research. Because of his excellent work, he [b]is honored as the Yangzi Scholar by the country and gets a research [b]funding of 4 million RMB every year. And now he has the ambition to set up [b]his own enterprise to occupy the optical grating market in China. [b]3. I have no advantages in the job market of US. Compared with those US [b]citizens who also have PH.D. degree of a famous university, I really have [b]no advantages to search a research position in a US university or research [b]institute, or even have disadvantages. You know, now the competition of [b]finding a position in a US university is really keen now. I've heard that [b]in one university almost several hundreds of candidates just compete for [b]one position. Oh, my God. And those big companies on optics just like [b]Nortel and Lucent, now are firing thousands of their employees. So entering [b]these big companies is not so easy. But in China, besides the [b]opportunities here, I also have a lot of personal relationship. And this [b]will greatly help me find a nice position with my strong academic [b]background. This is my advantage. [b]4. I have deep emotion on Tsinghua University. Here I have spent the six [b]golden years of my whole life. I have smiled and teared in this campus. [b]Every tree, every road, every classroom I am so familiar with. So many [b]unforgettable memories. I will miss these days and no other place can take [b]place of Tsinghua in my heart. So after graduation, I really want to come [b] back to my lovely campus. (煽煽情) [b]25. What will be your salary when you come back? [b]What is the salary of the professor of your research group? [b]Do they all come back from abroad? [b] Now in Tsinghua University or Peking University the monthly [b]incomes of most professors are no less than 8000 RMB, Including salary and [b]other allowance. And since most of them have project funding, so actually [b]they will lead nice lives. So I will also have a nice life after I come [b]back to China. [b] In our research group, there is a professor named DDD who was [b]graduated from the University of AAA and came back to China 3 years ago. [b]He is now the leading researcher on optical grating research. Because of [b]his excellent work, he is honored as the Yangzi Scholar by the country and [b]gets a research funding of 4 million RMB every year. And now he has the [b]ambition to set up his own enterprise to occupy the optical grating market [b]in China. [b] There are three young professors in our research group, all [b]of them come back from abroad. One is the Ph.D. of Stanford, one is the [b]Ph.D . of AAA, and the other is the Ph.D. of University of Arizona. [b] [b]26. Can you explain why 90% Chinese students didn't come back? [b] I don't know the exact rate. I think you figure may be the [b]figure of some years ago. As the latest statistical report says, more than [b]one third of Chinese students has come back. And with the development of [b]China, the government provides a lot of favorable policy to attract the [b]oversea students, such as position, salary, research fund, research [b]facility and so on. [b]he trend of coming back is becoming more and more popular. As for me, I am [b] sure I will have a much more promising future in China, so I will [b]dinitely come back. [b] [b]27. What is job of your parents? [b] My parents are both employees of Chinese government. They all [b]deal with the financial affairs. [b] [b]28. If I can't give you your visa, what will you do? [b] First I will very regret to hear this news. You may make me [b]lose this good opportunity. And then if possible, I will apply it again. [b]From my perspective, the opportunity to be enrolled in AAA is a unique and [b]invaluable one. [b]I really want to learn something and make myself more competitive. [b] 抓住继续要搞研究的主题。无法坚持后,最后可以说一下,可以去别的 [b]国家拿学位。 [b] [b]29. What is the difficult class do you have? And the favorite class? [b] Fiber Optics. Though the content of this class is not much, but [b]in fact the topic of this class is very wide and fast developing. [b] My favorite class is Optical Information Process. [b] [b]30. The most famous researcher on my field is Emil Wolf. He is the [b]founder of Modern Optics and the author of Principle of Optics. He is now [b]in the University of AAA. [b] My favorite movie is The Graduate. [b] [b] My favorite singer is Michael Bolton. [b] His song "Said I love you, but I lie" is my favorite. [b] [b] My favorite movie star is Tom Cruise. He is handsome. [b] He is divorced. The movie is Mission: Impossible. (谍中谍) [b] [b] My favorite book is 三国演义.... [b] [b] [b]As a well-educated and polite person, you should not interrupt my words. [b] [b]The Graduate
