　　根据记忆原理，每次记7个短语或句子是比较合适的。

　　1. Needy贫穷的

　　讲解：说到“贫穷的”很多学生头脑里只能冒出来“poor”这个词。但是如果大家常看BBC等地道英文，会总结出很多表示“贫穷的”说法。比如“impoverished”请看例句：

　　The previously free distribution of text books will now be confined to students who are needy.以前免费发放课本，现在只给贫困学生。

　　(注：needy主要用以描述群体，不用以描述自己或个人)

　　They were impoverished by a prolonged spell of unemployment.他们因长期失业而一贫如洗。

　　(注：impoverished尤用于新闻，指贫困国家和生活在贫困国家的人。富裕国家的贫困地区用deprived)

　　Poverty-stricken指赤贫的，一贫如洗的，如：a poverty-stricken family in 19thcentury Brooklyn19世纪布鲁克林区一个赤贫家庭

　　2. Go to the wall破产

　　讲解：BBC NEWS有关中国奶粉丑闻报道曾经用过这个短语。(Chinese milk powder are stymied, and scores of dairy firms have gone to the wall.)大家都知道的一个表示破产的形容词是 “bankrupt”。请看例句：

　　The firm will soon go to the wall.该公司马上就要破产了。

　　He bought up a bankrupt textile company.他买下了一家破产的纺织公司。

　　The company went bankrupt.那家公司破产了。

　　3. Disseminate传播

　　讲解：我们在写文章时，经常会用到“传播”这个动词比如传播信息，知识等。我们可以用“spread”替换“disseminate”。

　　Their findings have been widely disseminated.他们的研究成果已经广为传播。

　　The government has a responsibility of disseminating information about disease prevention.政府有责任传播疾病预防的信息。

　　4. Pose造成(威胁);引起;产生

　　讲解：这个词太常用了!Pose a threat to不管是在SAT还是在托福阅读写作中都会经常出现。

　　This poses a threat to agriculture and the food chain, and consequently to human health.这会对农业和食物链造成威胁，由此而危及人的健康。

　　He posed a serious threat to their authority.他对他们的权威造成严重的威胁。

　　5. Stagnant停滞的

　　讲解：今天在BBC NEWS上看到一篇文章，讲得是英国人现在养育小孩特别辛苦。开支特别大。其中用到了stagnant这个词。请看例句:

　　This research paints a stark picture of families being squeezed by rising prices and stagnant wages, yet receiving ever-diminishing support from the government over the course of the last year.这句话说很多家庭感到经济拮据，因为物价不断上涨，但是工资停滞，政府资助也是越来越少。(这里squeeze是“使经济拮据”的意思)

　　6. Self-made

　　讲解：第一次看到self-made这个词是一篇有关钢铁大王安德鲁卡内基的文章。Self-made的意思是 “having become rich and successful through your own hard work rather than having had money given to you”靠自己奋斗成功的;白手起家的

　　He was proud of the fact that he was a self-made man.他为自己白手起家而自豪。

　　7. Sicken

　　讲解：“sicken”动词，生病。BBC有一篇文章 “why China’s milk industry went sour”中有一句话：China’s failure to produce good milk has killed at least four babies, and sickened many thousands of others.中国没能生产出优质的奶粉。这造成至少4个婴儿的死亡，成千上万的婴儿因此患病。
