went to UC Berkeley this morning to check on the status of my application. [b]Although the result is within my expectation, it is still so hard to face [b]this first rejection. Husband is here so I don't know if I could choose [b]schools out of CA. [b][b]They admitted 90 out of 800-900, including 400 Chinese. (it seems [b]unthinkingable!) Four Chinese students were admitted (1 from Hong Kong, [b]three from China). Two out of the three applied from the US, one graduated [b]from Princeton and another one seems from Harvard or some other top [b]schools. Don't know who is the lucky one applying from China. [b][b]The first round selection is very strict: GPA, TOEFL, GRE, etc. About 300 [b]were dropped here (i.e. were not reviewed by the admission committee.) [b][b]For those who passed the first round, they have a cover sheet for each [b]application. The sheet lists about 8-10 idems, each idem ranks from 1-5. If [b]your GRE is strong, then 5; if your GPA is 3.3 out of 4 (like me), then 3. [b]I saw GRE, under GPA, grad-GPA, institution (the rank of your school), [b]recommendation, publication/honer, SOP, under major, math, etc. (not sure [b]if there is TOEFL, I guess it should be) If any one of them is under 3, you [b]will be kicked off in this round. (it seems one professor was in charge of [b]all the Asian students application) [b]Then, only a few were lt and were reviewed by the other members of [b]admission committee. Besides the 90 best, a few were catogorized as "above [b]average". There is no waiting list. But if there is still a space, it will [b]be selected from the "above average" pool. [b][b]While, the usul tips are: [b]1. If your GPA is under 3.6, don't even try! The only exception for this [b]year is a guy from MIT with GPA 3.5. [b]2. your under school, major and GPA are very important, almost weight 1/3. [b]My under major was social science, too weak! [b]3. GRE can not be low, but if higher than a certain score, it will be the [b]same. My GRE is extremely high but no help. (Q can not be lower than 765 [b]for this year) [b]4. Math preparation is extremely important. Especially multi-variable [b]calculus (not sure she rered to vector-calculus) [b]5. If you feel you have met all the creteria and want to try this school [b]from China, try to get a recommendation from highly reputated economist or [b]professor, it will help you stand out from others. [b][b]The letters of rejection and admission will be sent out by mail next week. [b]No e-mail and no phone calls. [b][b]I feel calm now and wish you all a good luck!
