Developmental Language Program The Developmental Language Program (DLP) at Perkiomen School is to meet the needs of children with average to above average intelligence struggling in the traditional school setting due to a diagnosed learning difference. It is important to note that these areas do not exist in isolation. Each process is ongoing and interrelated to the others.

English DepartmentThe Perkiomen School English Department is focused on helping each student develop his or her fundamental skills in English so that they can excel at an appropriate college. Our first goal is to help each student become a clear, fective writer. Students write and revise essays of many different types over their time at Perkiomen. The English Department teaches the MLA format for all writing assignments. Diana Hacker Pocket Style Manual is used in all English classes to ensure students learn the fundamentals of documentation. Using writing both as a thinking tool and to express thought systematically in essays and other forms are important writing objectives in every Perkiomen English classroom. We would also like each student who graduates from Perkiomen to be capable of using writing as a means to address and rlect on complex ideas. A second goal is to help each student learn to read and interpret various forms of literature of increasing complexity. The department offers each student a foundation in American, British, and World Literature, as well as a variety of genres including drama, poetry, mythology, fiction, nonfiction, and essay forms. As another goal, we would like our students to acquire a vocabulary that prepares them to handle college work, and enables them to grapple with challenging ideas and issues. Vocabulary and spelling work is carried on through texts in the Middle School grades. Vocabulary development in the 9th and 10th grades is drawn from literature. The fundamentals of grammar are a focus through textbooks and writing in the middle school. Students in the Upper School review grammar in the 9th grade, and otherwise study it as it applies to individual writing assignments. Grammar is also studied and reviewed in the context of writing assignments.

English as a Second Language (ESL) The ESL department offers courses for the beginning to advanced English language learner. The overall focus of the ESL department is to help international students successfully integrate into mainstream academic classes. The first priority of the ESL department is to aid the language learner in their acquisition of oral and written language and communication skills. Daily practice of conversational and written English is incorporated into all classes. Two instructional periods for students at the ESL I & II levels allow for intensive instruction for all areas of language acquisition. In the lower level courses vocabulary and grammatical structures are introduced, reviewed and strengthened. As students move up to ESL III, grammatical instruction is dictated by student needs as identified in their written work products. Another priority of the ESL department is to increase student comprehension and speed when reading English literature. A variety of activities and techniques are utilized to advance students ability to rlect on what they have read, boost student critical thinking skills as well as provide opportunities for them to practice reading both aloud and silently in English. Our final priority is to help the international student population adjust to and successfully integrate into an American educational environment. Teachers in the department continuously coach students about standards of behavior, manner of dress, proper social interaction, cultural norms and customs. Students know that members of the department are always available to help them successfully navigate through their days as long as they are here at Perkiomen.

Foreign Language Department The aim of the Foreign Language Department is to equip students with the necessary skills that will enable them to excel in their post-secondary educational endeavors. In order to properly prepare students, the Foreign Language Department employs a wide range of instruction methods and tools that serve to introduce and reinforce foreign language skills. The Foreign Language Department is dedicated to producing a versatile student comfortable with, and displaying a command of, the respective language of study. The Department seeks to teach students to read, write and converse in their respective foreign language. In order for students to properly absorb and apply language skills, it is necessary that they learn through different exercises aimed at cementing grammar rules, vocabulary, and expressions. The grammar, vocabulary, and expressions presented are used to continually add to the students language base. Weekly material is reinforced with a variety of exercises, vocabulary games, individual and group projects, and other assignments that prepare students for evaluations bore they are introduced to new material. Upper-level classes teach students to analyze literature in the respective language of instruction. Students are also introduced to different cultural and historical aspects related to the nations of the respective languages of instruction. Spanish classes are taught about the cultures and customs of Latin America and Spain, and Latin classes are presented with Roman history and are taught about the importance of Roman influence on Western literature and language. The Foreign Language Department believes that by presenting students with a wider perspective on the language and culture of instruction, students will graduate from Perkiomen School with a well-rounded foreign language education. As the Spanish-speaking population of the United States increases over the next century, it will become paramount that capable and well-rounded high school graduates have a working knowledge of Spanish. In addition to Spanish, Latin is also taught at Perkiomen School. Latin aids students in their preparations for the SAT examinations and provides the necessary background for many of today modern languages. It is the aim of the Foreign Language Department to offer courses that will be usul at post-secondary educational institutions and in the diverse professions that Perkiomen students pursue. As Perkiomen School adapts to a constantly shifting world of educational needs and advances, the Foreign Language Department will continue to assess the need for additional languages of instruction.

Mathematics Department The Perkiomen School Mathematics Department is focused on helping each student achieve a high level of success in Mathematics. The majority of our classes are taught using the traditional approach but we also offer a small number of individualized classes to meet the needs of the students whose backgrounds do not afford them success in a traditional classroom situation. We have five full time Upper School Mathematics instructors, one instructor who divides his time between Upper School and Middle School Mathematics, two instructors who teach two Upper School Mathematics classes and also teach in the History or Science Department and three teachers who teach Middle School Mathematics in conjunction with their other responsibilities. The course sequence begins with 5th and 6th grade mathematics followed by Mathematics 7, Pre Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry or Honors Geometry, Algebra 2 or Algebra 2/ Trigonometry Honors, Algebra 3/Trigonometry, Pre Calculus, Advanced Placement Statistics and Advanced Placement Calculus. The Honors and Advanced Placement classes are weighted and the student grade point average is adjusted accordingly. We are conscientious in our attempts to keep our curriculum current. We continually evaluate new books, attend conferences and workshops, and belong to organizations that focus on mathematics education in our continually changing society. We are aware of the new technologies that are constantly being introduced and are fortunate to have the hardware and software to introduce many of these to our students. Several of our primary goals for our students include our work to enhance the student ability to use the language of mathematics to express mathematical ideas precisely and to use factual knowledge to improve their conceptual understanding of mathematics. We work hard to provide the intellectual environment that will stimulate mathematical thinking as the norm.
-
Religious Studies Department The founders of Perkiomen School, the Schwenkfelders, believe that students need to be exposed to all the religions of the world. This goal is achieved with course offerings and a chapel program. Christian tradition is the moral foundation of western civilization, and a basic knowledge of the Old and New Testament should be an integral part of a sound education. Freshmen meet bi-weekly to explore the major idea, people, and events of Hebrew and Christian Scriptures.

The Science Department The Perkiomen School Science Department strives to develop students that become informed adults and capable of continuing their pursuit of learning science at an appropriate college level. In an ever-changing world, the students will be able to make the sound decisions that impact the environment, be able to evaluate information as it applies to an ever-increasingly technological world, and understand the manner in which science influences the human population. The Science Department&apos&aposs philosophy is to give every student the opportunity to experience the joy of learning science for a lifetime in learner-centered classrooms where all learners may obtain a comprehensive science education that will help prepare them for the challenges they may encounter throughout their life, so as to become members of an educated, productive and satisfied citizenry.
