下面的这篇文章将为大家解读哈佛大学奖学金的相关政策,哈佛大学表示即使在经济低迷的时候也会为学生提供丰厚的奖学金,2012年将提供1.66美元的奖学金,覆盖百分之六十的学生。
Applying for financial aid does not jeopardize (危及,损害)a student&apos&aposs chance for admission. Indeed, the Admissions Committee may respond favorably to evidence that a candidate has overcome significant obstacles, financial or otherwise.
Harvard College has provided assistance to students who need help in meeting their education expenses for over 350 years, enabling us to seek out the most outstanding scholars in the world and open our doors to students of exceptional ability and promise, regardless of their financial circumstances.
This year we will award $166 million in need-based scholarships to more than sixty percent of our students. Just in the past five years we have increased our financial aid by over 70 percent, enhancing our program to ensure the affordability of a Harvard education even in these challenging economic times. We understand that the thought of financing four years of college can be a daunting prospect for anyone, and we are eager to help you and your family understand our financial aid programs and assist you in finding ways to meet your college costs.
All of our financial aid is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need – there are no academic, athletic or merit-based awards, and we meet the demonstrated need of every student, including international students, for all four years. We invite you to explore our web site for a detailed description of all aspects of our aid program, including our Harvard Financial Aid Initiative for low and moderate income students, under which families with incomes currently below $60,000 are not expected to contribute to college costs. Beginning in the fall of 2012, financial aid will be further expanded for low income students, when this income level will be increased to $65,000.
We do not consider home equity or retirement accounts as resources in our determination of a family contribution, and aid packages do not include any loans. A typical student may receive over $150,000 in Harvard scholarship assistance over four years and the majority of students receiving scholarship are able to graduate debt-free. Our program continues to be generous for students across the economic spectrum, with more than two thirds of those receiving scholarship assistance coming from families with incomes greater than $60,000.
(need-based scholarships (建立在需求上的经济资助)是大多数美国大学的主要政策,也就是不看申请者的学术成绩或其他方面的特长,只看他们的家庭经济状况。)
如何评估自己的家庭经济情况:
Our financial aid policy is to consider all sources of income and assets for families. Factors such as family size, health care costs, sibling educational expenses, and other non-discretionary expenses that affect family finances are considered carully in our assessment of a family’s need for assistance. There is no income cut-off for our need-based scholarship eligibility, and there are even some families with incomes greater than $200,000 who, because of extenuating circumstances, receive need-based financial aid. We do not include retirement assets or home equity in our financial aid calculations. All other assets are considered in determining the parent contribution, but only after an additional amount is protected to ensure the financial security of the family. In cases where a family has little or no retirement and/or home equity, a larger amount of other assets may be protected.
In general, the simpler your financial situation, the more accurate this estimate is likely to be. Many families have complex financial situations (e.g. businesses, real estate holdings, negative income from losses, income that varies from year to year) which require professional judgment to arrive at an appropriate award. A calculator cannot capture all of these nuanced financial circumstances.
We invite prospective students and their families to complete our Net Price Calculator to receive an individual estimate of their scholarship eligibility and cost of attendance at Harvard. We look forward to working with you.
Admitted students who apply for assistance will receive a financial aid award at the time of their admission in early April. The Financial Aid Committee considers carully each admitted student&apos&aposs family financial circumstances and strives to ensure that a Harvard education remains fully accessible to those talented students we admit. Each student&apos&aposs demonstrated financial need is fully met with a combination of jobs and scholarship assistance. In the 2011-12 academic year we are awarding over $166 million in need-based scholarships.
