1. Tell me something about yourself.
I would like to tell you about myself from two aspects: one is my academic background and the other is my work experience. Talking about my academic background, I got my Bachelor and master degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1998 and 2001 respectively. In terms of my work experience, I got my first job in
QQQ as an electrical engineering in 2004 and I worked for QQQ for 3.5 years. I moved to Beijing in early 2004 to work for WWW as a systems engineer up to now.
2. How did you choose your undergraduate school and major?
I chose my school and major based on my internal interest. I remember that my parents suggested me to go to a medical school and they even mobilized their colleagues and friends to persuade me. I agree that doctor is a good profession. But I knew that I was more interested in Electrical Engineering, therore, I chose it as my major in a top engineering school in China.
3. Why did you decide to get your MS degree?
示范:After I got my bachelor degree, I was planning to develop in an academic environment, for example, being a professor in a university, so I needed advanced knowledge and strong academic background. Very naturally, I decided to pursue my MS degree.
4. Why did you come to USA after that?
示范:As you know, USA is one of the most developed countries in the world. It’s leading the world in many areas, including education. My plan was to get a Ph.D degree so that I could develop in an academic area. I came to the USA for this reason.
5. What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in USA?
示范:The biggest challenge I faced was the culture difference. The culture difference makes people think and behave differently. “Do as Romans do when in Rome”, I spent a lot of time in the first year on communications with Americans and on cross-culture activities. In this way, I adapted to my new life in USA very fast.
6. Why did you go to industry?
示范:I found that the abstract theories and research couldn’t stimulate my interest and internal passions. I felt that working in an industry environment for product development and communicating with customer are more appealing to me. So I wrapped up my study and got my MS degree and went to industry.
7. What’s the main factor that let you develop to today?
示范:The main factors are my interest, passion and responsibilities. If I am interested in something, I would really like to devote my time and passion into it and make it a success. This also makes me self-motivated. Another driving force of my development is my understanding of responsibility. I should be responsible for my family and I also should have social responsibility. Job is not a charity, I need to contribute to the business and the society too.
8. How did you choose your job in industry? Why this company?
示范:I chose my job based on my interest. I am fascinated with xyz and ABC is leading this industry. I not only want to devote my time into it but also want to stand at the front of the technology and business development in this field. ABC is such a company that can provide me such a working environment.
9. When you find your first job, what are the criteria you used and why you ended up choosing the company you are working for now?
示范:I basically chose my first job based on my interest and career goal. I had strong knowledge in electrical engineering and was very interested in telecommunications.ASD was leading the industry and its research arm ABC attracted me deeply. My experience demonstrated that my choice was right, I contributed to the company a lot and learnt a lot as well.
10. What’re your most important accomplishments in that company?
示范:Growing up from a fresh graduate to an experienced engineer, I led many projects in ABC. I can give you two as examples of my important accomplishments. One was a project I led in 2001. I led a team of 5 engineers and finished a critical project for ABC’s customer in USA. My team got the job done successfully within a week while it usually took an engineer 3 months. Because of my excellent performance, I received a “WERT” award for customer satisfaction from the vice president. Another example was that I led a team working on a project for BCC and brought in $6MM revenue into our organization. The revenue was especially important at that time. It contributed to the balance sheet a lot.
