With a devoted heart to the field of computer science, I am writing to apply for acceptance into the Ph.D program at your esteemed university .I made this decision through thoughtful considerations. I believe that earning a rigorous, challenging and exciting education at your department will make me scale higher academic and professional heights in my future career.
My interest in computer science was born during my internship in UID Center which is a NFO branch of Ubiquitous ID Center of Japan. It is there that I had some knowledge about RFID which is one of the most advanced technology in modern world and a method of remotely storing and retrieving data using tag devices, such as an adhesive sticker, that can be attached to or incorporated into a product. RFID tags contain antennae to receive and respond to radio-frequency queries from an RFID transceiver. The knowledge of Embedding system, sensor network, distributed computing, wireless connection and so on were applied in such technology. During the internship I translated a good many of materials about the technologies in this filed. Besides, I attended many international exchange conferences about RFID technology and communicated with Japanese professors and was really attracted by this wonderful field where the most advanced technologies were fully used. After the internship, I have written a paper about my viewpoint to this advanced technology. This term, we are taking the classes of Computer Course Design, Network, Database Technology, Pattern Recognition, operation Research. The deeper I delve into computer related course, the more interest I have in it. Sound academic background is the stepping -stone of my research and interest, and I think I have consolidated it.
In 2001, through the highly competitive National College Entrance Examination, I was enrolled in the school of information science & technology, Beijing Institute of Technology (one of the top 10 national key polytechnic universities in China), where there was a galaxy of distinguished professors in addition to a first-rate study and research environment. In this nurturing academic atmosphere and through fruitful instructions of the experienced teachers, I endeavored to enrich my knowledge in a comprehensive manner. The major courses, such as Experiments on Electronic Technology, Automatic Control Theory, Electronic Technique of Electric Power, and Electronic Drive & Basic Control Theory opened for me one gate after another into the core professional technical theories, and helped me grasp deep and all-round knowledge on control system and the basic knowledge of computer science. In my class of 60 students selected from all over the country, I was consistently ranking among the upper 2%, and my overall GPA is 83.09. For my excellent performance, I was granted the people’s scholarship in almost every year.
In my first year at college, I mainly concentrated on the theoretical study. In the later years, I made full use of the knowledge I have mastered by putting them into practice to develop my hands-on experience. I do remember the first experiment that I took part in - using software Multisim 2001 to design a circuit which can control the brightness of Melody Xmas Light according to the signal intensity of input music. At the beginning, I even didn’t know how to use this software, so I went to the library to borrow some rerence books to teach myself and then started to design the circuit. After the carul analysis of the circuit principle again and again, I set the whole circuit into six sections according to the experiment principles and requirements, each of which was independent and had their functions. During this experiment, many problems arose, and I solved them detail by detail. For instance, when the output signal could not reach the expired value, I changed the component which may not be included in the original requirement to let the circuit performance better. I was overjoyed when seeing the colorful lights were shining in the lab. Not to follow the rigid formulas or completely copy what the book says was what I learnt from my first experiment.
Afterwards , I took part in more experiments , such as set up a Database of the inpatient department of a hospital by using SQL and Access and designed a program which can realize many computers communicate ( like MSN) via network by using Visual Basic Language. In each experiment, I not only fully used my basic computer knowledge to meet the requirements, but also enhanced my problem-solving skills. For instance, in the experiment of realizing many computers communicate via network, the teacher just asked us to realize two computers to communicate, however, after setting a translate station; I successfully carried out my ideas of three or four computer communication simultaneously. Through these experiments, I come to realize that that the creative thinking, and practice with persistence & patience are the secrets of success. And it’s certain that the solid theoretical knowledge is the prerequisite of all these. So right now my desire to know as much computer knowledge as possible was even stronger.
Apart from my academic life, I took all the opportunities to develop my all-round abilities both on /off campus. As a member of symphony orchestra, I am popular on our campus for the gracul clarinet performance. For my clarity of expression and logical thinking, I took part in the speech and debate contests respectively. I still remember clearly the Nation College Student Debate I participated in May 2002, the topic was” Should human behavior be self –disciplined or heteronomous”. I was the leader of the team. During the preparation period, we 8 people had only one meal everyday and stayed in library to collect materials. After that we would have a discussion on how to response to our counterparts. Performed well in the tryout, but the result was not so desirable in the final period. On the way to school, we all kept silent and someone even cried. Most of them were freshmen, not wanting them to be frustrated at the first attempt in university, so I encouraged our teammates not to lose heart by analyzing our pros & cons. seeing the sparks of hope appeared in their eyes again , I myself cried secretly not for the undesirable result but for the good cooperation between our teammates. To be confident and learn something from what has passed and not live in the shadow of the frustration is the experience I got from the debate.
Meanwhile, I took a part -time job in Siemens (China) Co., Ltd., an international company in china. As a technique assistant, I did some assistance job, for example, translated the professional materials. Later, for the excellent work ability, I was assigned to negotiate with the clients directly and got a good result. The experience makes have more confidence about my ability.
Now, on the verge of completing my undergraduate program, I think what I have learned now is far from enough for me to deal with the problems in my future career. I still need to absorb as much knowledge as possible in this field. I believe that the outstanding faculty and flexible course in your university would help me to accomplish most in graduate study and in my future career. I would greatly appreciate it if you could give favorable considerations to my application.
Ultimately, I would come back to China when completing my study and devote myself to both research work and to a teaching career at one of the first-rate institutions of higher learning in our country. I believe there will be more chances here then and I can fully apply what I have learned to set up a network platform which can be connected with the international market.
