  Personal Statement by xxx

Nearly everyone has a dream in their youth, and the seeds of my dreams began thrusting up when they touched the soil of Chemistry. I was fascinated by the distinctive individual properties of chemical substances and marveled at phenomena displayed in experiments. They inspired me to explore the mystery of chemistry and make use of that power. Combining science and engineering, Chemical Engineering is a dynamic and continually evolving field of study. So, following my graduation from high school, I applied for the School of Chemical Engineering & Technology at xxx University, which is the best university in this discipline (as ranked by the Chinese Ministry of Education).

During my four years of college study, I had built up a solid fundamental knowledge of science and engineering. Devoted and hardworking, I was awarded a scholarship every year by the University. During the course of my undergraduate study, I gradually understood the importance of chemical engineering, which is the backbone of our society and has potential to help people make better lives. I felt the weight of this responsibility, and hoped I could be a researcher in chemical industry in the future. So it is necessary to pursue further study in this field.

I started my first step by being an undergraduate research assistant for Professor xxx when I was a junior. My program deals with the synthesis and photo-luminescence of porphyrins. With the guidance of my advisor and the cooperation of a doctoral student, I designed the reaction route and conditions, then, synthesized and analyzed the target product. To better accomplish my research project, I took some optional courses like Organic Functional Material and Nanoscience and Technology. My academic ability improved greatly and I received encouragement from my advisor. During that period, my advisor also told me, “The main difference between undergraduate students and graduate students is creativity; a graduate student’s responsibility is to create knowledge, not to obtain knowledge again.” Inspired by her words, I strove to inject my research with greater creativity. As reactants in my experience were very expensive and the yield of the product was very low, I tried many new synthesis schemes and introduced bold modifications. Implementing new catalysts into conventional methods increased the product yield and purity. The result turned out to be rewarding--- a Chinese paper based my results is in preparation. I am confident that my research experience and potential will benit me in my future study and research.

Due to my outstanding research records, I was selected from thousands of candidates in China to intern in xxxxx Electron Material Company-- a subordinate company of Chinese Academy of Sciences and xx Chemistry—a fortune 500 corporation. During that period, I understood better the formulas and equations in our textbooks from the real world production and procedures. I got to know more about the chemical industry and made huge strides in the areas of knowledge application and practical ability. In my opinion, accumulating experience in the chemical industry played an important role in preparing me for future study and research.

However, merely building up a solid foundation is not enough; there are much wider spaces for me to explore. I was quite active on campus, which provided me with many friendships and a sense of social responsibility which I believe is important. I also attended a Sino-American college student summer camp, through which I greatly improved my proficiency in English, and learned more about the culture and education of the United States. Especially after talking with some students from Chemical Engineering Department of xx University and University of xx, I became more aware of that there is still a large gap between China and other modern nations in this field. This further contributed to my goal of pursuing further education in the USA.

As a senior about to end my four-year pursuit of knowledge here, I am clearly aware of that the achievements I have made are only the beginning. So, I really hope I can be admitted to the Department of Chemical Engineering at University of xxxxx to pursue my graduate study because your university is one of the best public universities in the country and your department combines a diverse and talented group of faculty and students with interdisciplinary research areas. And the fact that your university provides a high faculty/student ratio (1/4) and family-like atmosphere has deeply impressed me. From my experience in scientific and engineering research, I have a strong interest in chemical engineering, and I firmly believe that my solid knowledge, background, research potential and strong love for chemical engineering, added to my strong sense of determination will prepare me a successful and bright future in your institution.

A Chinese graduate student of composite materials, I would like to pursue Ph. D. studies in a program in which I can do advanced inter-disciplinary research that is built upon my expertise in both chemical engineering and composite materials. I find that your program is one of the few where such research is possible.

I am due to complete my Master&aposs studies next year at the Beijing Institute of Light Industry, a well-respected higher-learning institution that has served as a major cradle of engineering talents for light industries in this country. Majoring in structural mechanics of composites, I have focused my studies on honeycomb sandwich and its applications for civilian purposes. Although I did not take many of the traditional undergraduate courses in this field, my graduate studies have proceeded well. Building on my extensive working experience with all kinds of materials, I have completed a host of projects, as listed in the Appendix, that are not only technologically advanced but also commercially profitable. My research has been highly commended by the school.

To accomplish what I have accomplished, I have had to be more intelligent and overcome more difficulties than most of my classmates, for I did not get to receive a regular undergraduate education. Although I performed strongly in the 1988 National University Entrance Examinations and met the requirements for university acceptance, I did not craft a good enough strategy in applying to the universities. As a result, my application fell through cracks, leaving me only the opportunity to study in a two-year college program, not to be discouraged by this mishap, I studied with diligence and creativity, and succeeded in firmly grounding myself in the studies of material propensities and structures. When I completed that program, I was as capable as most graduates from the honors program in handling practical material problems from the angle of chemistry.

Upon graduation in 1990,I first took up the job of an assistant engineer in a biochemistry pharmaceutical manufacturer, where I was in charge of the development and analysis of several lines of products. I was given the responsibility for VD Calcium Tablet in the first two weeks, as I demonstrated that I was able to do independent research, particularly in terms of quantitative analysis and microbiology inspection, from five raw materials to semi-made and finished products. As my talents showed up, I took charge of the production and inspection of more and more products. Towards the end of 1991, I was awarded the honor of Excellent Employee in the factory of almost two thousand people in recognition of my contribution to its business.

Armed with the ability to quickly grasp the essence of new things, I made even more contribution to my second employer, a Joint-Venture Company of cosmetics. In this company, In the first two months after I was hired, I established, with rerence to both the ISO and national standards,. The company&aposs standards of packaging materials for 35 different products from corrugated box to paper lid, from glass bottle to plastic cover. During the first half year, I turned myself from just a user of cosmetics to quality engineer of cosmetic actively engaged in R. & D. Three new products (Elysee Vitamin E Cream, Elysee Tonique and Elysee Lipbalm) I helped to develop were recognized as Provincial Scientific Achievements, for which I was conferred three certificates of Honor. I believe that when one embarks on a new career, he should be quick in accepting changes even though he must still stick to his old principles.

In these six years of working experience, I greatly improved myself in terms of technological expertise. I made chemical and microbiological examinations of different drugs skillfully and independently, successfully developed several new types of cosmetics, some of which merited the designation of Provincial Scientific Achievements. But more importantly, I learned to ask more sophisticated questions and then answer them.

The years of being an engineer has taught me how to be a person. I learned to be both a team leader and a team player. Working in conjunction with others, I have always held onto the principle of being honest, modest and helpful to others, whether I was just a technician, an engineer or even the assistant to the general manager. I enjoy working with other people. I have been well liked by my colleagues. At the farewell parties for me, some of my friends were so reluctant to say goodbye to me that they would burst into tears.

While working for the Chinese factory, I was once "borrowed" by a college to teach there as an adjunct instructor for half a year. During those months, I often worked late to check students&apos work and prepare for the next day&aposs classes. I believe that this teaching experience will serve me well should you be able to offer me the position of a teaching assistant.

At the graduate school, I have met new challenges the old way. I first acquired a profound understanding of the basic concepts and theories of mechanics (theoretical and material ones), and then applied the fundamentals to my major: composites. As you can see from the from the transcripts of academic record, this approach paid off. My first academic article Honeycomb Sandwich Composite will be published in the second edition of the Journal of Beijing Institute of Light Industry of 1998. Now I am writing my Master&aposs Degree thesis, in which I shall compare the mechanical properties of corrugated cores and honeycomb cores, analyze the outstanding characters of the latter, establish the standards of civil-use honeycomb fiberboard, and consider the marketing future of honeycomb fiberboard.

I am confident that the combination of my extensive working experience and my solid academic training has adequately prepared me for advanced studies in my chosen field of specialty in your distinguished program. To undertake such studies, I have learned English well, so well that I was appointed first the English secretary to the factory&aposs director and then the assistant to the joint-venture&aposs general manager. In these positions, I dealt with international visitors and handled English documents. Such English proficiency should prove a great advantage to me once I am enrolled in your program.

Although I am now focusing my academic interests on composite materials, you may find that I may be more suitable for other majors. If so, I would greatly appreciate it if you could advise me accordingly.

The following is a list of the research work I have undertaken under the guidance of my advisor (mostly in the area of industrial applications of composites):

Currently a student of chemistry at the Beijing Normal University, I am scheduled to graduate in June 1998 with a B. S. degree. The university has offered, on the basis of my outstanding academic record, to exempt me from the usually mandatory examinations for graduate studies, should I decide to join its M. S. program. After weighing all the pros and cons, I now prer to pursue my graduate studies with your university, as I think it will put me on better footing for my career.

My interest in science in general and chemistry in particular was first fostered by my family, which has, for several generations, been made up of professionals. My grandfather graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Doctoral degree in engineering, a highly unusual accomplishment for a citizen of mainland China in those years. My father, a professor of mathematics, was my main source of inspiration during the three years when I studied with the Beijing Mathematics Olympic School. My mother, a senior engineer of chemical engineering, was the motivation behind me as I participated in a variety of scientific activities such as the Solar Energy Club. Such a family environment has bestowed on me a gift for natural science that I have never failed to take advantage of. It has been my dream to become an outstanding expert in the field of chemistry.

Since I entered into the university over three years ago, I have studied diligently and conscientiously. With that, I have acquired a solid background in chemistry, mathematics and physics. With an overall GPA of 92. 29/100, I have, for three years running, kept myself as the very top student among the 114 undergraduates of my grade. I have not confined myself to my coursework, however. I have frequented the library and probably read more chemistry literature than most of other students. By satisfying my thirst for more knowledge, I have kept myself abreast of the new developments in chemistry around the world. I have also excelled in mastering foreign languages. Although I have never majored in the study of any particular language, my English proficiency has been improved to a point where it is comparable to that of most English majors in Chinese universities, and for that, I have been exempted from having to take an English course in the upper years. In recognition of my consistent excellence, I have been awarded the First-Class Excellent Academic Scholarship for three year.

Education at the Beijing Normal University emphasizes the importance of hands-on experience. In the summer of 1995, I joined Professor Tian&aposs team to work o the synthesis of inorganic materials. In 1996, professor Guo made me a member of his research team, which gave me good exposure to unsymmetrical synthesis. I am now carrying out (sophisticated) experiment under the direction of Dr. Wang. Through these arrangements, I have gained good experiences in laboratory research and greatly improved my skills for scientific experimentation. Starting from the beginning of next semester, I will be writing my graduation paper under the seasoned guidance of professor (zhong kexue), a research fellow from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

As the Beijing Normal University specializes in training teachers, I have also taken quite a number of general education courses, such as phycology, pedagogy and teaching methods. And earlier this year, I was awarded the Excellent Teaching Assistantship for my outstanding performance during the internship at a high school.

I did not allow my heavy load of study to deter me from taking part in extracurricular activities. As the chair of the charity survives committee on campus, I honed my organizing skills and augmented my work ficiency. Convinced that the meaning of life comes from helping others, I have always been most obliging whenever anyone comes to me for help, which has won me lots of friends. Such personality, combined with my intellectual vigor and determination, should stand me ready for any challenges.

I am applying for acceptance into your program because I know that your country has leading the way in the development of chemistry, and I would like to put myself on the cutting edge of the field. I believe that your graduate school can offer the kind of academic quality and environment that I need. I am particularly interested in analytical and physical chemistry, as I have been fascinate by both its theoretical foundations and its practical promise. I am also interested in polymer chemistry and environmental chemistry. The completion of graduate studies with your program will not only enable me to realize my most cherished childhood dream but also put me in a much better position to serve my country.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could give favorable consideration to my application for acceptance and financial aid.

During a concert, people can find me more often at the console, operating unfamiliar software on computer, rather than playing with my band on stage. I’m not studying in this field, but I’m a keyboard player equipped with knowledge of computer music. When I combined all these with the simple amplifier and console together we are able to make a concert professional fect. But who knows I was just an ordinary piano boy bore I entered the university?

Deep from my heart, there is something driving me to learn more advanced knowledge and practice them. It is not vanity but the curiosity and the spirit of creative. In less than half a year, I learned MIDI technology and production software, such as SONAR, all by myself. These made my team easier to write, record and rine our own songs, even publish them. I also bring an air brush usually used in model painting to the Student Union bringing images my teammate never seen bore. Though I have quitted from the band and lt the Student Union, the skills and experiences I got would be benit wherever I am.

Curiosity also makes me attentive to details in my research. In a short semester course, I did a series experiment to test the quality of waste liquor from maize fermentation aiming at finding ways to utilize it. Though I was told to test its basic performance when serving as snow melt agent only, I found it may have the ability of reduce the erosion of metal according to the composition of the liquor and literatures I’ve looked into. So, I continued to test this hypothesis by experiment after I finished my task, and the experimental results bear out my supposition. However, it may not be a great success because its capability is not strong enough, but I think this finding could at least guide my future exploration in making it better. Anyway, I am still happy about it because it gives me an experience of discovery.

Also, I am fascinating in advanced instruments and solving problems under their help. Without modern chemical instrument, it is entirely possible that I never be informed with the composition of the waste liquor I talked above. This may be one reason that I have not gain excellent skill of piano play but acquired technique about computer music. When I got the assistance internship in Water and Wastewater Monitoring Center of Jinan I was extremely happy, because there are great amount of advanced chemical instrument, such as ICP and GC-MS. During days working in that center, I learned the operation of those instruments in my spare time. This experience supplementted my knowledge acquired at school, since there are not that many expensive machines for each student to operate by themselves, even once.

While being attracted by advanced technology, I’m also good at practice what I have learned. This is even more true in my university life. I can often correlate newly learned knowledge with what I have seen in my father’s chemical plant. For example, knowledge gained in Structure Chemistry informed me with the basic mechanism of FWA (Fluorescence White Agent, main product of my father’s factory). At the same time, the experience gave me a deeper understanding of book knowledge. Though I’m not erudite enough now, I’m confident in making better products in the future.

Upon graduation from your school, I plan to learn more about organic chemistry. Participating in the development of economical and environmental friendly chemical product would fulfill my aspirations. Learning in the U.S.A. is a great challenge as well as a brand new experience for me, and I’m looking forward to face it. I believe my colorful experiences would contribute to the future group and I can achieve my goal after my study.

Few aspects of life fall outside the scope of chemistry and this is what fascinates me about this dynamic and fundamental science subject. From a young age I have enjoyed and excelled in mathematics which rlects my logical and enquiring mind. Thus, I made the decision at high school to study mathematics as well as two sciences as part of the International baccalaureate. It was during this part of my education that I discovered my interest for Chemistry and my desire to study the subject at a higher level. Furthermore, I developed an enthusiasm for the topics of energetics and in particular, organics. My practical skills have been greatly enhanced through the study of Biology and Chemistry and the assessment of my abilities. Earlier this year I completed the &aposGroup 4 Project&apos which required me to utilise many life skills as well as calling on the skills learnt in my two science subjects. The &aposGroup 4 Project&apos consists of a group of 8 students formulating a research question, planning and executing relevant experiments and finally drawing and presenting conclusions. Good teamwork and practical skills were a must and I was pleased to be awarded very high marks. My love for chemistry stems from an appetite to understand the physical world around me and learn about, what is sometimes rerred to as the central science.

The subjects I study at a standard level differ greatly from my higher and subsequently they have enabled me to broaden my knowledge. This is partly the reason I chose the IB. Another salient reason as to why I chose to take the IB was because of the opportunities the course offered through the inner hexagon. My studies of Theory of Knowledge have helped me to evolve an analytical and questioning mind which I feel is very applicable in the ever expanding field of modern chemistry. The IB is a very challenging course but I feel it has strengthened me in many aspects. Since starting the course in September of 2007 I have enhanced my time management and organisational skills in addition to becoming a more open minded and rlective person. Recently I have written and submitted a 3700 word extended essay about the area of circles and formulation of Pi, requiring me to exercise both my research and essay writing ability.

Presently I am working towards achieving my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and during my Easter holiday last year, I travelled to South Wales in the company of a group of 6 friends with the ambition of qualifying for the final assessed expedition. I believe that I showed great determination over the four days walking as well as overcoming the challenge of being self sufficient. My other pastimes include trampolining, playing the bass guitar and practising parkour. I love being involved in sport and through parkour I can show self expression, control and discipline. A level of self confidence, an ambitious mind and a hardworking attitude towards improving are all qualities I feel parkour has helped me to achieve. Over the year and 6 months I have attended the Sixth Form I have completed over 150 CAS hours by recording my past times and charity work in a fair-trade coffee shop. Parallel to my studies, I enjoy working as a waiter in a local hotel. This involves me being punctual, hardworking, sociable and most of all, responsible for my own thinking and acting upon this. These are all skills that I believe are vital for any perspective university student.I am greatly looking forward to the opportunities that university has to offer me both academically and socially. My passion for Chemistry, determination and positive attitude lead me to the conclusion that studying a course at university that will both excite me and satisfy my thirst for knowledge, such as chemistry, is the next step for me and my education. My eventual aim is to become a teacher of Chemistry at GCSE level and to inject the excitement into the subject that I have discovered.

  It&aposs a long story.

500 hours is merely an indication of a duration of time for the average people, whereas it means a most memorable experience to me. As a young researcher, I once spent 21 sleepless days and nights in a state of anxiety at a most critical stage of one of my experiments as a graduate student. At that time, I was faced with a catalyst life experiment with a prolonged time of 500 hours which is aimed to demonstrate the industrial application of a certain product. For lack of adequate funds in our research group, I was the only person lt to proceed with the difficult research work on this subject. It is beyond imagination of those foreign researchers if they could see me monitoring and operating round the clock amid the instruments all by myself. In the daytime, I would manage to snatch a few minutes&apos nap on the next-door desk. I had to spend most of the time alone working in the lab, constantly turning to music for consolation and rreshing myself with cool water. In the end, the remarkable success of the experiment made worthwhile my 21 days&apos toil and the 2.5 kilograms&apos weight loss. What is the inexhaustible source of such a mighty support for my persistence? The answer to this question is dinite and indisputable--- it is my intense interest and fiery passion that have enabled me to maintain this persevering spirit.

Such a powerful enthusiasm and interest actually originate from my parents who are specialists in mechanics. Thanks to these two senior engineers, excellent graduates from Tongji University, I am not only endowed with talent and indispensable academic atmosphere, but also inherited their passion for research projects. My undergraduate studies of those basic theories and experimental courses offered in the Department of Applied Chemistry have laid a solid theoretical foundation for me. Specialized studies of environmental monitoring have gained me a better understanding of the strategic position and the positive outlook of the development of green chemistry and environment-friendly chemistry. During my graduation designing, I made a detailed analysis of the waste water disposal problem faced by two factories, consulted a vast literature and proposed a creative conception of "making good use of waste for the recovery of waste" with an fective method to treat fluoride-containing wastewater with the wastewater after steel casting. Two papers derived from my meticulous research can be considered as the first achievements in scientific research in my life, which have been included in the American CA with one of them evaluated as the Chinese core academic periodical. During my college life, I have received many honorary titles and academic awards such as Dalian Excellent Graduate and Three Good Student with an overwhelming advantage over other students as far as my scholastic performance is concerned. However, the tremendous passion and excitement brought about by my success in scientific research projects can not be paralleled by what I have achieved in my academic studies.

I was admitted to the Chengdu Institute of Organic Chemistry (the Chinese Academy of Sciences) to start my graduate studies upon the completion of my undergraduate degree program. I spent my first year learning in the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Despite the potential challenges from those brilliant graduates from Tsinghua, Peiking, and Chinese University of Science and Technology, I still performed extremely well in my coursework, which greatly amazed all the teachers and students. Some of my assignments have been kept at the Academy as marvelous samples for the freshmen of each year to view and emulate, one of which is Report of Experiment in HPLC.

Staring from the second year after I finished all the fundamental courses, I returned back to its Chengdu Institute to devote myself to the research on organic catalysis, mainly to the research of heterogeneous catalysis. As for me, this is merely the beginning of real challenges. Since my research group was established for a short time, it was inevitably caught in an adverse condition of scientific research as to the lack of adequate funds, instruments, and reagent. Besides our ceaseless forts to apply for a large outlay for scientific research, my teachers and I had no choice but to fetch those discarded and scrapped instruments, spare parts, and reagent from other research groups with a favorable research circumstance. Under our carul maintenance and assembling, the unserviceable could function again as the common instrument and devices. Shortly after our procurement of the needed outlay, my supervisor lt for France for further studies in his capacity as a visiting scholar. I remained to continue the research project while other members in our group transferred to other research subjects. I had to assume all the responsibilities of the laboratory arrangements, such as its circuit, water pipe and decoration. I began to purchase after my detailed examination of the types, properties and purchase period of both domestic and foreign articles for scientific research. In the meantime, I was in charge of the financial affairs and office management in the lab.

During the absence of my supervisor, my painstaking forts and diligence put me in many experts&apos good graces. In a way, all the prestigious experts became my academic advisor. They not only lent me their idle devices, but also passed on to me their cherished and valuable expertise. Moreover, they sent me their own reagent and tools, and always asked me to view and emulate their large-scale equipment installed in the center of operation, overhaul, maintenance, analysis and testing.

My dedicated forts finally yielded fruitful results in my scientific research. The expert panel in the Institute have unanimously appraised my two papers for their industrial application value: one is The Preparation Method of a Solid-acid Catalyst with High Selectivity and Activity for Esterification; the other is A New Reaction Technology and the Equipment for Gas Phase Esterification. In view of their practical value, I thus applied for Chinese Invention Patent of the novel catalyst and reaction equipment and succeeded in my application, which can be regarded as an unprecedented occasion for a graduate student in China. My success has borne out my research ability, and my research level can more or less be placed on a par with those experts in Fudan University, Jilin University, and Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

After the completion of my master degree program, I began to work in the Institute of Applied Chemistry at the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. My outstanding hands-on ability and comprehension gained high appraisal and appreciation by Mr. Zhou Feimeng, an associate professor at UCLA. I was greatly honored by Mr. Zhou&aposs invitation to join in his cooperative research group, and fectively learned the theories of nano-analytical science and bio-analytical chemistry under his meticulous guidance. In return for his great help and supervision, I helped him with laboratory construction, and taught his postgraduate students and senior visiting scholars how to operate the instrument and do the experiments. I also acted as an assistant professor for Prof. Yuan Zhuobin, president of our Institute for a year and a half. Mr. Yuan delivered the basic specialized courses of Science of Purification and Separation and Modern Instrumental Analysis to graduates, whereas I was responsible for supervision, experiments and examinations. My devotion to my duty was highly spoken of by the students and teachers.

Many years&apos dedicated forts and accumulation gradually made me a versatile person. Since I could quickly adapt myself to different specialties in the field of Chemistry, I have built up a sound ideological system which perfectly combines the concept of green chemistry with advanced chemical research. I am eager to become a talented young man in the interdisciplinary programs. I firmly believe that only in the ideal academic environment in the U.S. will I be able to make the knowledge of many disciplines into a comprehensive body, to bring out the best in them, and bring the creative ability to the full play to achieve greater progress in the scientific research. Once a senior expert recommended me to do my doctoral program in Hong Kong University. As far as I am concerned, the real and ideal palace of knowledge is located nowhere but in the United States, if one is longing for the pursuit of genuine, sophisticated and first-rate knowledge.

It is my conviction that I have possessed all the fine qualities, and my academic preparation and intellectual sophistication can also meet the requirements to pursue advanced studies in the United States. My ultimate objective is to acquire the most advanced knowledge and keep myself abreast with the latest developments in my chosen field. The advanced experimental instrument, technology and facilities, the education system and academic atmosphere in the U.S. are far beyond their counterparts. The invaluable instructions by accomplished scholars make it possible for me to tap my abundant potentials. I can freely roam in a vast sea of books and literature, and be relieved to see adequate instrument and reagent. I have full confidence in my ability to reach the acme of my career in scientific research with the help of these favorable conditions.
