Job Description: The Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, University of California, Riverside, invites applicants for a 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor. The position will be available July 1, 2016, and carries a 50% research appointment in the Agricultural Experiment Station () and a 50% teaching appointment in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. The department currently has 17 ladder-rank faculty and three Cooperative Extension Specialists. Opportunities for collaborations are available with existing programs conducting applied and fundamental research in our department and college.

Research: The focus of the position is on the biology and ecology of water- and soil-borne pathogens and to develop novel Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods for managing disease. Research on root-associated oomycete, fungal, or bacterial pathogens is prerred. Research should be primarily pathogen-focused (mycology or bacteriology) but may extend into broader studies of microbial taxonomy, epidemiology, metagenomics, or population genetics, disease diagnostics, soil/water microbiology or chemistry, plant physiology, resistance breeding, or disease management including cultural, biological, and chemical control. The successful candidate will develop a competitive, innovative, problem-solving research program using both modern and classical methods for studying plant pathogens. The candidate is expected to obtain competitive grants from local, state, and federal sources.

Teaching: The position will contribute to graduate and undergraduate teaching in areas such as mycology, plant pathology, bacteriology, epidemiology, and ecology of soil-borne microorganisms.

Application: A Ph.D. in Plant Pathology or relevant area and the proven ability to conduct innovative research are required. Demonstrated skills in applied and molecular techniques are required. Soil-borne disease research and post-doctoral experiences are prerred. Evaluations of applications will begin November 15,but the position will remain open until filled.
