I am keen on Asian politics, economy and culture. As a native Chinese, however, what I learned from life and study experience is that my knowledge of this field is not as profound as I had imagined. With the rising of China and East Asia, they expect the world cast a more objective eye on them. I am willing to equip myself and present the real China and East Asia bore the public with and through my further study on East Asian Studies in the US.
Three years undergraduate study in . has prepared me well for accomplishing researches on my own and as a team member. The analysis method we are frequently exposed to and making use of is qualitative analysis. Though the course, Quantitative Research Method, offered in junior year, my mastery of it is far from mature. Packaging my passion, I seized every chance to get improvement in practice.
In the summer of 2013, I was recommended by , a professor at the , to attend in a research on Chinese electorate s voting behavior in Akademi Kewartawanan Informasi Taima (News and Information Academy of 某国家). Over a month s endeavor, I had approached to a large quantity of usul resources of某国家election. Qualitative analytical method was applied to historical analysis while quantitative was employed to predict future development. In order to experience the real feeling of Chinese voters after failing the election, I interviewed both scholars and local Chinese residents and asked their views on present government and election of 2013. Along with reading newspapers and searching the Internet, I concluded that the dissatisfaction toward the governing political alliance (Barison Nasional) was existed in Chinese community. On the other hand, to obtain the data of election in the 1960s, researcher ., and I were immersed in archive and eventually acquired special bulletins on the election of 1969 on Sin Chew Daily and New Straits Times. The General Election of 1969 was another big harvest. My Chinese commentary has been published on Chinese Daily on Oct. 10th, 某国家, and the article in English is being assessed by the Journal of East Asian Studies.
In the English article, The Political Dilemma of Chinese Electorate in 某国家, my attempt on undertaking a qualitative analysis was approved by my instructor, Professor . That experience has greatly enhanced my potentiality and initiative for research and analysis and bestowed me more confidence on conduct research independently, which will certainly contribute to my graduate study. United States, a country praising highly of quantitative analysis, really fascinated me. It is indisputable the best place for me to make provision for my future research career.
Aside from laying a solid professional foundation, I am an active participant of extracurricular activities. As the head of the organization department of Student Union of our school, I have organized a competition and various activities which strongly improved my skills of organization and leadership. Bore the 70th anniversary of on Sep. 24, 2012, I was elected as the person in charge of reception group for VIP alumni. That is a marvelous experience that I had to lead a team of more than 300 members. I have learned to respond to emergencies and have gotten more awake to the significance of details.
More importantly, I obtained a more macroscopic perspective on the community I belong to. Consequently, when participating in National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Project (Undergraduate), I, together with two classmates, raised a proposal of establishing a database named . It aims at providing internship and employment opportunities for students who would like to have a hand in foreign-affairs-oriented activities. Firstly, we conducted investigations and handed out questionnaires in universities, companies and government offices to collect the requirements of employers and the attitude of students towards this plan. Upon 1000 pieces of feedback, we evaluated the feasibility, using SPSS as a tool for the analysis. Without rerence of similar organizations, we still worked out a solution by building our database through Access. All the ideas and plans were raised and made under group discussion. I deeply experienced how to cooperate with others and the vital function of teamwork. Currently, we have promoted our project into the third stage, inquiring into the operation modes of that database, for-profit or non-profit. Our project should be completed by the end of November, and we are going to present what we have achieved to an assessment panel from the Ministry of Education. I am deeply convinced that our database will provide constructive suggestions for the development of our Career Centre and pragmatic experiences to similar research groups.
In my spare time, I still kept a habit of reading, writing and thinking. In The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order, Huntington claimed that Asia, especially East and Southeast Asia, is moving toward unity. China, as the Core State of Confucianism, sets off to rebuild Greater China and its Co-prosperity Sphere. And Japan, swaying between Asia and Western countries, also shows prerence for Asia. That prediction greatly aroused my interest in Asian integration. But then a few questions came into my mind: Will the leadership over Asia belong to the ASEAN or Japan and China? Where is the starting point of Asian integration? How will the US affect that process? Will the influence of Chinese culture radiate to Southeast Asian countries? Will the cooperation between Chinese entrepreneurs promote the interaction among China, East Asia and Southeast Asia, especially in the context of oversea Chinese control over the economy of Thailand, Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries?
I am eager to solve my existing doubts and focus on Chinese affairs and East Asian policies in graduate stage. With interdisciplinary and flexible courses and outstanding faculty, the MA in East Asian Studies of Stanford University will certainly allow me to obtained intensive area study and pave the way for my doctoral study. I believe my passion, Chinese background and previous research accumulation will make me qualified to your graduate program.
