Student profile
Fahd Khaldi, Morocco (Chevening Scholar)
I chose to study on UEL s MA Media Studies as it offers the ideal balance of practical and theoretical work. I also chose UEL because of its high standard of education and attractive location in London. My experience here has dinitely been a rewarding one. The warm and friendly welcome I received when I first arrived, the excellent quality of teaching, the energetic student life and the vibrant atmosphere on campus have all made my time here very satisfying. The long list of excellent facilities and services includes a state of the art brand new library and multimedia equipment, helpful online resources, a careers advisory and employability unit and a variety of other usul personal and learning support services. There are also great social opportunities both on campus and in London.
I am glad I made the choice to become part of UEL s global community while also making important steps towards my future career.
LOCATION
Our two campuses at Stratford and Docklands are within easy reach of each other and enjoy excellent transport connections. Historic Stratford is at the heart of a major regeneration programme in the East End as it prepares to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, while Docklands and the Thames Gateway is one of the fastest-growing areas in Europe. We have also recently opened a community learning centre in the nearby town of Barking. There is plenty to see and do on our doorstep, Central London is 20 minutes by rail, with equally easy access to the Essex countryside.
ACCOMMODATION
Our accomodation is located at our Docklands campus on the historic Royal Albert Dock with stunning views over the water to London City airport, the Skyscrapers of Canary Wharf, and the O2 Arena. Our characteristic brightly-coloured, circular residences facing west along the dockside were completed in 2000 and provide accommodation for just under 400 students living in shared flats. April 2007 also welcomed the completion of our spectacular Student Village east along the dockside with five, seven-storey additional halls for around 800 students. There are two well-equipped laundrettes within the halls of residence, and the campus facilities include two bars, a rectory, 3 coffee shops and outdoor fitness centre. Gallions Reach is nearby - a major retail park with shops, supermarkets and restaurants.
We prioritise giving rooms to new students coming to study with us for the first time, who live furthest away in the UK or are coming from abroad and to students with disabilities.
You can live off campus - You could choose to rent a room of your own in a private house, with meals provided or sharing the kitchen with the landlord/ landlady. Depending on the meal provision, the costs for this during 2007/2008 are between ??50-??80 per week. You might choose to share a private flat or house with friends, but we normally don t recommend this in your first year. Prices for this will vary depending on the kind of accommodation chosen, but will range from ??50-??100 per person, plus all bills.
Our Residential Services Office (Tel: 020 8223 2909 / 2409 / 5409) is based at Docklands Campus and is open all year. We look after students who would like to live in accommodation we own and we also keep lists of local landlords and landladies who let either individual rooms or complete properties (please note that the properties are not inspected by the University and you are strongly recommended to view bore accepting). Full details of how to apply for help in finding accommodation will be sent to you when your place at UEL is confirmed.
FACILITIES
There are currently three Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) open all week during term time. Docklands Library/LRC is open 24 hours a day, every day with open access to electronic and printed information resources. All LRC s provide recommended books and all other necessary background reading, slides, journals, law reports etc. Students have access to a wide range of subject based electronic information sources on CD-ROM and via electronic databases, and all computers in our LRC s are internet enabled. Our student residences are also all linked up to the UEL broadband network.
We have a range of Bars, Restaurants, Cafes and Vending Machines available at each of our Campuses. All outlets have suitable access for wheelchair users. A wide choice of food is available including halal, vegetarian and healthy options.
We also have one of the first Campus based outdoor Gyms in the UK, offering all manual equipment an indoor Gym offers, but set on the Docklands waterfront.
UEL also offers a free bicycle hire scheme for students to use around the local vicinity.
STUDENT LIFE
The University of East London s campuses have excellent rail and bus links to central London and students will find that accommodation and the cost of living is, for the time being, less expensive in this area of London than elsewhere within the capital. East London is a cosmopolitan, vibrant area with shops and street markets selling goods and foods from all over the world as well as local produce and delicacies like fish and chips and pie mash.
The Students Union is central to student social life including its many clubs and societies. There is also a wide variety of bars, restaurants and shops in and around UEL S campuses. East London has become a popular evening destination in recent years, especially in the Shoreditch and Hoxton areas. Nearby Canary Wharf and Wapping offer many bars, restaurants and museums in an area where the past and future combine. East London is also home to many sports clubs including West Ham United Football Club of the English Premier League, Newham Essex Beagles Athletics Club, and the London Regatta Centre.
