Newcastle University was established as a School of Medicine and Surgery in 1834 and is now one of the UK s leading international universities. We have a tradition of welcoming students from all over the world and currently have more than 2,400 international students from more than 100 different countries.

Academic strengths

Our students enjoy an excellent success rate in finding employment after graduation and the University is a key supplier of new recruits to many international companies. The University has developed a range of teaching and research interests which span a wide and varied range of subjects. These include arts and humanities, biological and biomedical sciences, environmental and agricultural sciences, business and management, education, communication and language sciences, engineering and computing science, medicine and dentistry, physical and mathematical sciences, and social sciences and law. Newcastle is a member of the elite Russell Group, an association of the leading research-intensive universities in the UK.

LOCATION

The University is situated in the historic city Newcastle upon Tyne, the regional capital of the North East of England. Newcastle is one of the most exciting, friendly and cosmopolitan in the UK, and is fast becoming an internationally renowned centre of culture and science. It s a place of stylish shops, caf -bars and enterprise, with great nightlife, sport and culture.

The surrounding region has many areas of beautiful landscape in which many historic castles and other monuments, including the World Heritage site Hadrian s Wall are situated.

Newcastle has excellent transport links with major cities throughout the UK as well as abroad. Newcastle s international airport offers connections to a wide range of European destinations and a fast train service means that London is less than three hours away. There is an extensive bus network and underground metro transport system with stations close to the University campus, making transportation around the city quick and easy.

ACCOMMODATION

At Newcastle, all our student accommodation sites are situated within easy reach of the University campus and city centre. There is a range of catered and self-catered accommodation to choose from, all providing a great environment for both studying and socialising. Family accommodation is also available, and international students are guaranteed accommodation in their first year of study provided the application is submitted bore the specified deadline.

The majority of student accommodation is within walking distance of the city centre and all University facilities. This accommodation includes home-stay , catered accommodation where meals are provided or self-catering shared apartments. We can also offer advice and assistance on renting private accommodation in the city.

FACILITIES

University Library Service

Our library offers an extensive range of books, journals and other materials complemented by access to a wide range of electronic journals and other online resources. Newcastle s library is the only university library to have been awarded the UK government s national standard for excellence in customer service, the Charter Mark , five times in a row.

Computing Facilities

Newcastle University has always had a large-scale, high-quality computing service. Over 1,400 PCs in 44 clusters are spread throughout the campus and some of these facilities are available 24-hours-a-day. In addition to this many schools will have there own specialist hardware and software facilities for student use.

INTO Newcastle University Centre

The INTO Newcastle University Centre provides programmes in English language ranging from short courses that can be taken just bore you begin your academic programme, to one year courses to bring you up to the standard required by the University. The centre also offers a Foundation Programme and Graduate Diploma Programme, which provide preparation for undergradute and postgraduate study. You can also continue to improve and rine your skills in English by following an in-sessional English programme while studying for your degree.

Careers Service

Our national award-winning Careers Service is one of the best resourced in the UK. Highly experienced and dedicated staff will help you plan your future career by providing personal advice and guidance. We also hold specific employment information for many countries. We are one of the only UK universities with a member of staff dedicated to developing links with overseas organisations in order to identify career opportunities in your home country.

STUDENT LIFE

Students Union

The Students Union lies at the heart of the campus, and supports over a 100 student societies, the Student Advice Centre and the Job Shop, which helps students to find part-time work in the city. It is a place to take a break and relax, get involved with new activities and meet new people. Membership of the Students Union is free when you register with the University.

Student Sport

The University Sports Centre is one of the best in the UK. It includes a state-of-the art 125 station health and fitness suite, a dance studio and a main sports hall. Excellent facilities, over 50 sports clubs, professional support and a top 10 finish in the British Sport Association (BUSA) rankings 2006/7, means that there is something for everyone.

Environmentally Friendly Campus

The University continually strives to ensure that the campus is an environmentally friendly space in which to study. One of the key ways of doing this is through sustainable waste management which means there are recycling points all over the campus, and the University gets all of its electricity from 100 per cent environmentally friendly resources.

Student Wellbeing Service

Our Student Wellbeing Service consists of a team of professional counsellors and other specialist staff who can offer confidential advice and support on a range of issues, including: finance, disability, mature students, students with children, life matters. The University operates a Personal Tutor System which is central to the support services we offer, and provides a personal link between you and the University. You are assigned a personal tutor when you arrive, who is usually a member of academic staff involved in teaching the subject you study. You can turn to them for advice and help on all matters, whether about the choice of modules, finance, or any other aspect of University life.

FEES ENTRY REQUIREMENTSFEES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Tuition fees are set annually, and you should check that these fees still apply when you accept your offer of a place at Newcastle. Please note that EU students pay the same tuition fees as British nationals providing they meet the necessary residency requirements within the European Economic Area.

Band 1: Arts and social sciences, agricultural economics and food marketing, postgraduate fine art, mathematics and statistics

Band 2: Agriculture, engineering, science, medical and dental courses up to and including Stage 2, undergraduate archaeology, architecture, fine art and music

Band 2A: Solely for postgraduate research programmes where high-cost laboratory work forms a considerable part of the course

Band 2B: Solely for postgraduate research programmes where high-costs laboratory work forms a substantial part of the course

Band 3: For clinical programmmes, applies to medical and dental courses from Stage 3 onwards
