OVERVIEW
Royal Holloway is ranked among the UK s top university institutions for both teaching and research. Since Queen Victoria presided over the grand opening ceremony in 1886, the College has continued to grow in size and status, building on the excellence of our scholarship and talents of our students. The College now has a student population of over 7,500 with students from over 120 countries.
Academic strengths
The College offers degree programmes in three faculties: Arts, Science, and History and Social Sciences. In addition to single honours degrees, students can opt for joint honours and major-minor courses.
The College encourages applications from students from all social, educational and ethnic backgrounds. It maintains an active membership in many schemes designed to promote academic opportunities for all. The University of London degree is recognised the world over as a premium qualification.
Facilities
Students at Royal Holloway have access to three excellent libraries on-campus as well as access to the University of London s centrally located Senate library. Computer facilities include a College Computer Centre with 24-hour access to over 500 networked workstations. Work is in progress to provide network facilities to all our accommodation halls.
LOCATION
Royal Holloway s campus is a lively and friendly place where you will find a strong sense of community. It is set in 135 acres of beautiful parkland in the Surrey countryside but close to a number of towns such as Windsor, and within easy reach of London (thirty-five minutes away by train) and the UK s major communications network. London plays a significant role in the lives of most of the College s students. Heathrow Airport is only seven miles away and can be reached by bus or taxi.
The small town of Egham is the location of cafes, restaurants and pubs (some of which date back to the 17th century). The nearby village of Runnymede is one of the most historic sites in England, as it was here in 1215 that King John signed the Magna Carta, thereby creating the first ever system of law.
ACCOMMODATION
All students who firmly accept a conditional or unconditional offer of a place at Royal Holloway are guaranteed a room in a hall of residence for their first year if they apply on time. Overseas students are given priority for accommodation for their entire degree programme if they meet the application deadline. All accommodation halls but one are located on campus. Students have a choice of catered or self-catered accommodation, mixed or single-sex halls. There are also special needs facilities and a limited amount of family accommodation. Nearly all second-year and many final-year students live in private sector accommodation, usually in the neighbouring areas of Englield Green, Egham or Virginia Water.
Accommodation costs for 2007-08 range from £2,193.90 to £4,361.90, depending on the hall of residence and length of tenancy.
FACILITIES
Royal Holloway has three libraries. The largest, the Bedford Library, has half a million volumes and subscribes to 1,700 periodicals. Students at Royal Holloway also have access to the University of London s central Senate Library. The College computing centre, which houses open-access computer laboratories, has the relevant software and e-mail and internet facilities for all students. There are over 500 networked workstations in the computer centre and the library. A card security system allows 24-hour access.
The health centre has a team of male and female doctors, as well as nursing staff, providing twenty-four hour cover in term time, and additional staff to deal with specialist matters such as physiotherapy and psychiatry. An independently run childcare facility for children aged between two and five is located adjacent to the main campus. A limited number of places are available for the children of students.
Royal Holloway has theatre facilities, including the UK s only Japanese Noh theatre. In the summer, outdoor drama performances take place in the Founder s quad. The main Student s Union building includes three bars, a coffee bar and the Union s administrative offices. It also houses the main function hall with a capacity of 1,200. Bands that performed recently at the University included the BodyRockers, Lemar, Girls Aloud, Jamiroquai and the Lightning Seeds.
The newly rurbished £5 million sports complex includes a sports centre integrated with a newly-equipped fitness suite, free-weights room, aerobics studio and four-court sports hall. The College also houses extensive playing fields, and squash, tennis and netball courts. Further rurbishments are under way and will bring a forty-station fitness suite, social facilities, further changing rooms, an artificial turf pitch, further squash courts and a climbing wall.
STUDENT LIFE
The Students Union employs over 250 students in jobs in on-campus student entertainment facilities and events. The Union operates an accreditation scheme for all of its volunteers and staff, so that you can leave with more than just a monthly pay packet. The Royal Holloway Student Development Programme is also open to all students who want to gain certificates in skills such as time management, event planning and budgeting.
The Students Union runs its own award-winning media - a newspaper, The Orbital, and a radio station, 1287 AM Insanity.
The Students Union operates three student bars; Tommy s, The Stumble Inn and Medicine, at least one of which you ll find open 7 days a week until midnight during term time! They are fun, usually free and totally safe places to socialise bore and after lectures, plus they are perfect venues for partying all night! The Union aims to provide cheap but high quality entertainment alternatives for students, whether this be a bite to eat, a pint of beer, or admission to a function. It also arranges regular market days selling everything from posters and plants to jumpers and jewellery. The Union has over 100 clubs and societies open for all students to join. Any student who finds that one of their interests isn t catered for is more than welcome to get some people together and start up a new society.
Student Services co-ordinates the College s support services and accommodation as well as dealing with individual student problems. The Students Union also has a welfare, advice and information service, and runs a nightline counselling service for students.
The College is improving its provision for students with special needs and learning difficulties. A new educational support office has been established for assisting with the application process, to clarify the nature and level of support required by students with special needs and to smooth the way bore and after arrival at the College.
On graduation all students automatically become part of Royal Holloway s active alumni relations programme which keeps graduates in touch with each other. There is an extensive events programme and there are international and professional groups enabling graduates to maintain their contact with the College and other alumni.
