Students can cook and eat in communal kichens, or in University restaurants.

FACILITIES

In recent years, Staffordshire University has upgraded many of its accommodation, learning and recreational facilities. Developments include a new, state-of-the art media suite on the Stoke campus for students studying Journalism and Media courses. Plus, a new multi-media technology suite at the Stafford campus, which was officially opened by HRH The Queen in March 2006.

Staffordshire University has a fine reputation for providing the practical facilties to enable students to learn in a hands-on way. For example, students on our undergraduate Forensic Science course have access to their own crime scene house , in which they can investigate staged incidents using the forensic knowledge that they have acquired in leactures, seminars and library work. We aim to bring learning to life - and real life to learning.

In summer 2006 major improvement works will begin at the Leek Road site at the Stoke campus. Architects are using designs created by one of our former students from the Faculty of Art, Media and Design, who came up with the best idea to improve the range of social and cultural activities that take place at the site.

Customer-friendly changes have taken place on campus - the student restaurant, The Terrace, has been rurbished and new coffee shops have opened.

Staff and students are excited about the new plans, which will enhance excellent facilities already in place. These include:

A sports centre on each campus

An independent Film theatre at the Stoke campus

24-hour opening of libraries at the Stoke and Stafford campuses

A free internet access for all students

A free email account for all students

STUDENT LIFE

Each student s experience of Staffordshire University is unique to them, but as a University we aim to provide you with as many opportunities as possible to lead a rich and fulfilling student life - academically, personally and recreationally.

International students are welcomed to the University during International Welcome Week bore the start of the first Semester. After that you will meet your academic tutors who will introduce you to your course and provide you with support in getting used to methods of learning and teaching that are particular to the British higher education system. In addition, you will be assigned a personal tutor to whom you can turn for help and advice of either a personal or academic nature.

The University s Student Support service, Students Union and student societies are always available to help you to settle into the University and to get used to life in the UK. There are tens of student societies with interests ranging from sports to philosophy. Societies popular with international students include the Internatonal Students Society, the Malaysian Society, the Chinese Society and the South East Asian Society. Students from all countries are encouraged to participate in their social activities.

The University s chaplaincy service exists to support students in exploring and practising their faith. Although the predominant religion in the UK is still Christianity, the University s prayer rooms can be used by people of all faiths, and the chaplains will help to provide you with information about the nearest place for you to practise your religion.

Our students tend to suggest that the student culture is different at each campus. The Stoke campus, based in the middle of the city, is urban and multi-cultural and has a larger student population. The Stafford campus, being out of the town centre, is more contained. Most of the students there are studying Computing and Engineering degrees and tend to socialise at the Students Union venues on-campus. The local population is less mixed than in Stoke, but many international students now study at the Stafford campus. The University and Students Union work hard to ensure that the opportunities available to students in both campus communities are diverse and benicial.

We want you to have the time of your life while you re with us - but we work with you to provide you with the qualifications, information and career support to help you succeed when you graduate.
