Costs of a U.S Education
Tuition:
Most states charge a higher "non resident" rate to international students, and classes often have additional fees attached to them. For example, in science and art classes, lab and equipment fees are usually separate and must be paid at the beginning of each term. Additionally, schools often have several fees associated with student life. These can include fees for identification cards and activities and other payments that should be clearly outlined by the school bore you arrive.
Books and Supplies:
You are responsible for paying for books, notebooks, computer accessories and other study supplies. Almost every school offers significant savings on books and materials to students through a bookstore or student plan. It is not always necessary to take a computer with you. Many institutions offer class information on line.
Housing and Food:
Most students choose a dormitory or residence hall for at least the first academic year. Dorm rooms are usually shared by two or more people, which is a great way to make friends and have someone to explore your college or university with. Housing is also available on many campuses for married students. Residence halls and dorms charge a housing fee for each term with a separate fee for food. Keep in mind that rural areas are often much less expensive than larger cities. The fees for accommodation and food are generally charged at the beginning of the academic year or term in one sum. In larger cities and English language institutes, students can live more economically off campus. Rental agreements in the U.S. often include first and last month’s rent plus a "security deposit" or "cleaning fee."
Personal Expenses:
Of course you will need all of the things you usually need at home, such as grooming aids, stamps, newspapers and medicine, as well as money for laundry, dry cleaning, transportation, recreation, entertainment and so on. Carrying large amounts of cash is not advised anywhere in the U.S. You will probably be able to set up a bank account and apply for credit cards if you have good credit in your home country.
Medical Insurance:
Health insurance is essential in the U.S., and most schools require you to purchase it when you enroll. Medical expenses can be very high. The insurance provides a very helpful guarantee that you will not have to bear the costs alone.
Most schools have a plan specifically designed for international students and their families. Expect to pay at least five hundred dollars a year for an individual and up to two hundred dollars per month for a family.
