Having taught English in China for over 11 years now, I quickly came to the conclusion that my native tongue that I took for granted, was actually a difficult language to master.
When you look at English more closely, it is a hotchpotch(大杂烩) of Greek and Latin roots with many suffixes and prefixes that seem to follow a loose set of rules.
Why is English hard to master? (为什么英语学习很吃力呢?)
Because when a rule is made, it is often broken. For example, the classic rule which says: “I” before “E” except after “C”. Words such as believe, fierce, collie, die, friend and deceive, ceiling, receipt.
Now let’s break the rule: species, science, sufficient and seize, weird, vein, their, foreign. I am sure that there are many more words that you can find which break this rule.
English is hard.
In the Chinese language, both written and spoken, there are the 4 tones to help you? Do you have this help with English? NO!! Look at the word “rose”. Is it a flower or is it the past tense of the verb to rise? Or is it a woman’s name? Until you hear or see the word in context in a sentence, you don’t know!
English is hard.
How about the pronunciation of the letters “ch”( called a digraph) together? Is it /ᵗᶴ/ as in chalk, cherry, church, much or /ᶴ/ as in charade, machine, chef or is it a /k/ as in architecture, mechanic?
English is hard.
Sometimes words sound the same but have different spellings and meanings (heterographs). The classic examples are to, too, two and there, their, they’re but also Korea, career. When listening, many of my students complain that they have trouble distinguishing between “teen” and “ty” as in sixteen and sixty.
So if you find that English is hard, then come to AOJI Education, because AOJI makes English easy!
